Just signed up and im having some trouble understanding how to approach the material on guitar wisom from my level.
Here is some background about my ability.
Before I stopped playing I mostly noodled around with the a blues scale, but mostly just in that boxed position at the 5th fret. I don't know other scales or how to use them. Was obsessed with John mayor and blues rock. I always wanted to be able to play those quick sharp blues solos.
I know open major chords A-G (at 1st position)
I know the notes of the G clef, but can't sight read music, and don't know how it translates to the fretboard. I understand basic timing. Played clarinet in high-school band so im familiar, but I wouldn't say I took it seriously enough to be musically competent.
Mostly got by on tabs when I did try to learn songs and played mostly power chords and simple lead licks.
I can pick out all of the 'A' note positions on the fretboard between frets 1-12 but I'm still learning.
Always wanted to be able to jam but never quite got it.
I used to be able to play 'say it ain't so by Weezer' in its entirety solo and all by heart, im sure I still could physically play it I just dont remember everything. Not the most complicated song but I knew all the guitar parts and im just trying to give an idea of my ability to play.
I always wanted to be able to play faster stuff like van hallen, still do, but I'm also into the idea of learning more about funk and jazz. Lately I've gotten into progressive bands like Chon, Polyphia, Strawberry girls, and they inspired me to pick the guitar back up.
I feel like I'm lacking some of the fundamentals, but I don't feel like I need to go all the way back to learning open chords and how to count 4/4 time, but I dont want to dive too deep too fast.
My goal is to develop an actual simple practice routine that I can do every day. Learning some theory is a given, but where do I start with the actual guitar lessons on guitar wisom?
If someone could get me pointed in the right direction I would really appreciate the help.
Thanks
I have played for many years and simply started with the Beginner Series with guitar in hand. Lessons are just a few minutes each. I ran through each lesson in order, finding some valuable nuggets along the way even if it seemed like I already knew the material. I gained a terrific understanding of of what Tomo Fujitsu considers to be foundational.
After going through the beginner lessons, I have spent most of my time in the Music Theory lessons, and some time in Foundation & Technique.
My goal is to get through Music Theory and Foundation & Technique to prepare me for Blues Lessons.
** sorry about autocorrect! Tomo Fujita.
Thank you for your reply. I guess I will just do the same. I also picked up the new edition of the william leavitt book. I think I'll start with the sight reading and the theory for now as I work through the beginner series and see if there is anything I might be missing out on.
