Thank you Sammi & Tomo! You are the dynamic duo! I appreciate your input and recommendations and will continue to watch and play very slowly. Thank you both so much.
Watching now while doing my exercises, aha, yes, body movement, hmm very interesting indeed. Now I need to go do it! Thanks again!
You're very welcome Ken! We always enjoy watching your videos!
You are giving a lot of inspiration to others! Good job!
I highly recommend to watch these videos when you are not doing anything.
Just relax & don't do anything while you watch those videos.
Thank you.
Tomo
I didn't really read this thread when it came out. Now I'm glad I did read it. I'm trying to addi picking as usually I just do fingerstyle. No matter how many videos I watch I just can't get it down right. As I hold the pick the fingers that are doing the holding sometimes touch the strings. Or other times the pick doesn't stay still and rotates, so I hold it loose and it fall out of my fingers, then hold it tighter and the attack is too strong. Who knew holding a pick is so nuanced. And I have the opposite problem Ken, I tend to pick too shallow at times and miss the strings. I think I need to post videos of strumming as that is where I have the.most issues.
Thanks for starting this thread Ken!
Thank you Michael!
Great thread about techniques!
Pick is always moving between two fingers.
I hold a pick as light as I can. Very easy to drop!
Not easy at all!
But easy to play if you hold it tighter.
Thank you.
Tomo
Hey Michael, I hear you. Iâm having a major (hopefully) breakthrough on strumming but itâs taken awhile! (Picking remains the big challenge).
Anyway, it came while watching a lesson unrelated to picking specifically. SR16 at 7:30 mark Tomo goes into how he holds the pick related to strumming, amazing! Been working on this and dare I say that itâs coming along. Sounds and feels great, and yeah the pick moves but itâs managed by the picking motion itself! Check it out if you like:

Thank you Ken mentioning SR16!
We should start marking these golden nuggets of wisdom!
Me too Michael. Weâre a bunch of deep pickers. Itâs all part of it very humbling in a good way. Even the pros drop picks. Iâve seen Tomo drop picks in his videos. We just have to keep chasing it
Thank you Jefrey.
I drop my picks all the times so I have 3-4 picking in my pocket all the times.
I have about 10-15 picks on my table/desk in my office.
Picking technique is very very deep!
Thank you.
Tomo
Ha-ha you forgot to mention how many picks are on the floor at any one time! đ
Fitting for this thread title.
I keep them in my pocket and then they go missing. Then sometimes find them again in a back pocket somehow.. The TF signature picks you have to pay more attention. The first one I used got worn down very quick.. one week . Because I pick so hard when not paying attention.
Makes you realize since the material is softer than my other generic picks. And I like these picks a lot so am more careful now. Or else will go through them very fast.
Dryer machine blues âclickity clickâ!
Pick material is so important! Yes! If I pick.. my TF signature picks won't last too long!
That's why I have to play softly as I can.
Thanks for sharing Jeffery!
Tomo
Dryer machine blues indeed. lol
Hi Tomo! It's been awhile since I posted the alternate picking exercise you recommended. Here's the latest installment.
I'm being patient with the process, avoiding even thinking about outcomes. I don't really perceive anything shifting significantly, but I will continue to put in the time each day.
As I mention in the video, I start out at 50 bpm each day and over 15-20 minutes work up to 2 on 4 at around 50.
I will say that rehabbing my hand has gotten quite challenging. I'd like to think I'm further along in functionality and being pain free, but I'm not. So hoping a few more months will bring about improvements physically. Thanks for watching!
Thank you Ken for sharing this!
Your body movement will need better natural movement.
This is not too easy! Very very important.
Counting this... should be straight 8th notes feel. No swing feel at all.
This exercise is 9 bars phrase so you need to add one more bar.
Too fast! Practice slow! Maybe 40-48 on 2&4.
Your alternate picking is good! Thanks so much!
Tomo
Hi Tomo,
I did this at 40 bpm 2 & 4. I can go sub 40 with a different metronome which is probably a good idea, or I can do straight par beat between 60-70 bpm.
As far as body movement, Iâm at a loss as to what to say. Swaying side to side IS natural for me, so not at all clear what youâd recommend here.
Iâll pay closer attention to straight 8âs and listen closely to where I swung them. And, Iâll add in the 9th bar as you mentioned.
Alternate picking is correct, but pick âbobsâ up and down as I increase the speed. Iâm in a cloud of unknowing when comes to not bobbing the pick as I go faster. Guess thatâs part of the unfolding process.
Thanks for your honest assessment Tomo!
Okay! That case. Just slower! Every beat 50-70 is good.
Not side by side. Moving body is also not easy!
Straight 8th feel is good. Alternate picking is good! Softer!
and softer left hand too.
You're very welcome!
Tomo
Thanks Ken for sharing this video. Great to see your progress and also appreciate you sharing as i havenât gone deep in this lesson but enjoyed reviewing with you when you sent this out and got something out of it. This is a good one for sure. I like your Strat!
Thank you Jeffrey for encouragement!
Tomo
Thank you Jeffrey!
Thanks for the update, Ken! Itâs great to hear that you are shifting from an outcome-oriented mindset to a process-oriented approach in your practice. Slowly...smoothly...you are doing it.
I can relate to your internal struggle with recovering from an injury. Some days, you feel like youâre making progress, while on other days, your body reminds you that it is still healing. As you engage in consistent practice, such as this alternate picking exercise, youâll notice the subtle changes in both your body and mind. While the practice itself remains the same, you are forever changing. Be kind to yourself and take good care!
Thanks for reaching out Sammi. I appreciate the encouragement very much. At the end of March I stopped taking an NSAID as it was wreaking havoc with tinnitus and my voice. Guess I'm finding out how much it was doing in regards to inflammation and pain.
As the saying goes, "this too shall pass."
Thanks, Ken
