Hello Tomo,
I would first like to thank you for creating a catalog of invaluable guitar resources for people who may not be physically able to obtain a guitar instructor--people such as me :)
With that said, I recently watched a video of you and your student jamming and discussing ideas such as picking touch and strumming dynamics. I've been playing guitar for a couple of months now (5-6) and I've noticed that I have a problem developing reliable strumming, sometimes missing up strums and down strums completely. The down strums aren't much of an issue but the up strums seem to really never fall in place. I would like to know how I should be approaching the up strum, should I twist my wrist as I come up to create a "paint brush" motion or should I not involve any wrist motion at all?
Side Note: I'm strumming with a Fender Medium pick. I plan on working my way up to much heavier picks. And Im also playing my electric guitar in a classical position.
Thanks in advance,
Dozy
Here is Tomo's reply:
"Thanks so much for joining my Guitar Wisdom. I really appreciate your kind words. Rhythm guitar is a very deep topic! I create a lot of dynamics with my pick (holding my pick very gently). First you need to work on a swing groove with R 3 7 chords. Then you can do other grooves, and you can use a bit more wrist motion. I use a heavy pick (Pickboy 1 mm) to control my dynamics. Try a heavy pick!"
