Can anyone share, what is the best way to hold the pick?
thanks.
This just my personal opinion.
If you take a look at different famous guitar players they all tend to hold their picks in a similar way but with small variations.
I hold my pick between my thumb and my index finger. I just cup my hand gently and place the pick. Depending on whether I flat pick, hybrid picking or play a 16th funk groove rhythm I do small adjustments.
But my main rule is to always try to avoid unnecessary tension. My goal is to be loose in all muscle in my picking hand except the ones that need to do the work.
I hope this helps.
This like all things with the guitar this can go down a rabbit hole. There is no right or wrong way to hold a pick. There have been a million artists that do their own thing that strays from the norm. The standard way is to place the wider end in between your index and thumb to whatever feels comfortable. However, some of the greatest guitar players have strayed away from this norm. And with everything with guitar you never want to sound the same and using the pick in the exact same way makes it sound exactly the same all the time and this is not what we are looking for as guitarists. The Edge from U2 uses the wider end of the pick to play with and you will get a different sound doing this. You can also angle the pick at different angles and get different sounds, a 45 degree tilt to the pick will drastically change the sound. Brian May doesn't even play with a pick, he plays with a coin. But what you should be thinking about as a guitarist is how can I create a different sound any way I can.
