I know all the scales up and down the fret board and I would really like to be able to improvise without it sounding like random licks, I'm trying to follow along with the lessons but they all just seem really random and I feel like I'm not learning anything. any tips?
I'm finding lesson 22 very good. Tomo has a few lessons where he teaches chord progressions, then in the next lessons gives you ideas off soloing. Also Ive found triads so useful in getting away from playing shapes and patterns. I have recently started trying to sing/hum (badly) the phrase i want to try and play. Im also working hard on hearing the chord changes and making sure i use chordal tones in my phrasing. Best advice Ive heard from Tomo is be kind to yourself.
Tyler--
BP Ryder said it best. Focus on triad and hearing the melody to make your soloing more melodic. Also, check out the thread Systematic Approach posted by Joshua Boyd where he asks similar questions about how to use Tomo's site. (I posted a reply in that thread--way too long:) )
I've slowed down my playing to work on dynamics and melody. I too hum, sing and then play melody. Also, I've deliberately practiced playing horizontally more than vertically when soloing. After about a week of focusing on that technique, I've found my speed, tonality, and phrasing improving (it's still not performance grade but better).
Post any tips or questions you have after reading the Systematic Approach Thread....
Enjoy the learning journey,

Nice words Rick. I love that we are all helping each other to get the most enjoyment out of these lessons. Keep it up Rick!
