Hi Tomo-san and fellow subscribers,
I subscribed about 2 weeks ago and I’m learning so many new things! How I wish this was around 10 years ago when I was actively playing. Got into a rut (stuck in the box and got so sick of playing ‘box’ solos) that I stopped playing for quite a number of years till recently.
I am starting to see outside the box right now. My question is when improvising, how do you visualize the fretboard for the note degrees/intervals? Do you refer to the scale (something like shape, but of course with awareness of do re mi etc.) or do you use the triad patterns (again the notes) or chords. I hope my question makes sense.
As much as possible I am trying to avoid the box pattern, trying to listen how the intervals sound like and ‘predicting’ my next note.
Here is Tomo's reply:
"Thanks so much for subscribing to Guitar Wisdom. First, please take your time watching lesson videos 1-12 and the Theory videos. Try to hear each chord and triad, so that you will hear the colors of notes. Learn a few phrases with 2-3 notes, then figure out other positions where you can play these phrases. Practice a lot of rhythm guitar over the chord changes. This way, you just cannot get lost! Try to improvise around a melody.
