Hi,
I am currently on TF4, learning notes on the fretboard. I want to really master this section before I move on.

How do I test myself to see if I am good enough to move on? How good do I have to be on this?

Do I have to be on the level where if someone were to point randomly at any place on the fretboard, I could tell the Note as well as the pitch in a SPLIT SECOND??? When can I tell I am good enough with the fretboard before I move on to other stuff?

I mean its not hard to memorize the the fretboard. But I usually take time to point out where each notes are located by counting from open string to that note. But I feel that Tomo is saying, its not good enough. He just did not really touch on how good is "'good enough".

I thought I was spending too much time learning the notes so I moved on. I think it might be better to just learn slowly over time. Playing the triad lessons and really paying attention to the "Do Mi So" locations of each of the notes in the chord helps. Over the past couple of weeks, I've noticed that I'm picking up a lot more notes because of the chord progressions that I'm learning, just pay attention to the individual notes in the chord instead of the chord as a whole.

But I'm a novice, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I feel like the scales you learn in music theory really helps as well!

"Good job! How about asking yourself whether you can play F everywhere on the fretboard! Can you play all the F's? Try something simple like playing the same 2-3 notes all over the fretboard. Try to be creative. You should know the notes well enough to name them in 3 seconds. Stay on each topic as long as you want to stay. Keep working on this lesson and on triads."

I suggest to focus on the “blind areas” of the fret board: play as much as you can in those areas you usually use less, change habits by finding different places you play chords, that should really help in memorizing notes.
Everyone know exactly the notes in the first 3 or 4 frets because those are the first and most used since beginner level. Try.

Also it helps to learn all the triads too. I just go where is all the 'F's? I find them down the fret 6,5,4,3,2,1 and play the triads (R,3,5) with inversions. Helps you learn intervals and relationships to the Root.

I just do this whenever I'm watching TV or what not. Random note name pops in my head. I go ahead and find them all and play triads.

You can do it in 4 string sets too. (6,5,4) (5,4,3) (4,3,2) (3,2,1)

So for string set (6,5,4) I just find the F note on the 6th string. Play triad. Then the 5th string. play triad, etc.

You will find that by doing it this way, you learn where the note is and also the root triad and the 2 inversions.

Select the "show timer" option and pick a time duration. I use it to help me identify what I don't know and then I'll drill that for a bit and then see what random note it is on and try that one to find more weak spots, drill those, and repeat.

Eventually I'll try to play the notes it shows before the timer runs out, but I'm not there just yet.
