I'm working on learning the R37 and R37R chords. It takes me some time to get my fingers into the right position, and sometimes I have to mess around with my hand position to play all the strings correctly. Should I still practice with a metronome even though I'm having a little trouble playing the chords?
It’s always good to use a metronome. Let’s say you’re able to change chords at 50 bpm without a problem and the space between beats gives you enough time to make the change. Play at that tempo 5 or 10 times through the progression and then try at +2 bpm. Slowly move tempo up. You’ll be surprised how the muscle memory comes. But it’s always good to practice with metronome. Even if it’s chromatic up and down the neck. It helps to think rhythmically in whole, half , quarter, triplets etc
Maybe practice the R37 to get your fingers comfortable without a metronome then practice the changes and rhythm part with a metronome using chord shapes you're more familiar with like a bar chord (R5R3). You'd probably learn to put together the exercises pretty quick.
