Hi Tomo,
chord progression A- G7 FMaj7
The key is A minor.
You called G7 the "flat 7th" and FMaj7 the "flat 6th."
G# is the M7 of A, so I get why you would call G7 the "flat 7th," and a similar reasoning applies to FMaj7 being referred to as the "flat 6th."
However, I was confused because I applied the Roman numerals to the chords in the relative major key of C and see that the Fmaj is the "sixth" and G7 is the "seventh."
My question therefore is, when you are referring to the Roman numerals (e.g., the G7 chord being the "flat 7th"), should I be referencing those Roman numerals always from the major scale, in this case A major (instead of the relative major of C major)?
I hope this question makes sense.
Thanks
Here is Tomo's reply:
"Thanks for subscribing to my Guitar Wisdom. First of all, just don’t worry about this! In time, you will understand it. If you count from A minor, G is the b7 degree (bVII), and F is the b6 degree (bVI). In the key of C: C is the Root (I), so G is V, and F is IV."
Thank you so much for sharing!
Confusing!
Just number system.
Case by case.
Hope you got it!
Thank you.
