Hi Board,
I'm watching some videos of SRV, and I notice their picking hand isn't set in the back of the guitar. It's moving more freely, almost like he is strumming individual notes. I also saw his fretting hand thumb is hitting the 6th string. I remember Tomo saying in one of his first videos, that it might be better to play with our thumb more parallel with the neck, on the back of it. How does he get such good muting when he's playing is my main question. Is it all in the left hand, or is there right-hand muting involved at all?
Here is Tomo's comment:
"SRV’s picking technique and muting technique are amazing! Please watch his left thumb closely! In general, it is better not to compare or add any styles. Just focus on clean, relaxed technique.
"I also use my left thumb to mute or hold the bottom note. That’s another technique to work on. Please look at and enjoy all the possibilities! It’s better not to look for quick answers."
