I found a course a while ago to play a Jimi Hendrix song where I was then gripping the guitar neck to play thumb over chords. Been playing it a lot. SRV grip.
I was watching a video from Tom Quayle on correct hand position - C shape like a dead spider and I realised I had been playing a lot of lead guitar gripping the guitar neck like a baseball with my thumb over and not at all in this C shape / dead spider. It had crept into my playing... then I remember my old guitar teacher who had said to play the way Tom did, but I had forgotten.
And Tomo talks a lot about the thumb and wrist too. So is gripping wrong?
I have been having a lot of pain in my wrist and I wonder if this is the reason? I know I have a weak wrist as I have been operated many years ago for carpel tunnel on both wrists.
So the question is.. which is better technique? Or easier for the wrist?
If Hendrix is a wrist killer then I’ll give up on that.
For bending ,yes we grip, but single notes I realised I am gripping too and shaking hands with the guitar,
Appreciate all inputs.
Thanks
EDIT: just rewatched lesson 3 and I guess in some ways it answers my own question.. injury free playing softer and smoother... still, any experience out there I would appreciate to hear.
Think I have to give up those Hendrix chords lol
Here is Tomo's comment:
"First, if you feel any pain, please don’t do that. The Hendrix-style thumb technique for holding the bass note is one way to play the guitar, but there are many other ways. So, when playing R 3 7 chords with a 6th-String Root, use your 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers. No thumb. In all cases, use less pressure with your left hand, if possible."
