Hi,
When practicing the lydian mode the John Mayer chords you use are a bit advanced for me. Instead I am replacing them with just an EbMaj7 and a Bbmajor7 and looping it. I then practice playing
Eb lydian over the 2 chords. When I start on the route note (EbMajor7) it sounds a bit off. You then go on to explain that using the 4th note in the major scale in an avoid note which in this instance is an EbMajor7. Can someone explain how I can practice this a bit better?

What is the first chord in your loop?
If you started with Bbmaj7, then your scale should be Bb ionian. If you started with Ebmaj7, then your scale would be Eb lydian, so the root note (Eb) should sound home for the Ebmaj7. The avoid note in this instance is the Ab which is the 4th of natural Eb major scale; the 4th note of Eb lydian is A which is (#4) of natural Eb major scale. When the loop changes to Bbmaj7, you want to periodically hit the maj7 note of Bb which is also A in addition to the Bb triads (Bb, D, F). Emphasizing this in your solo brings out the lydian sound.
