Dear Tomo,

I have a question about your strumming technique for R 3 7 groove which uses more of an arm motion and less wrist. Would it be applicable in other genres of music, not only in funk, but in pop, rock, or R&B; or even in playing simple open chords such as Cmaj, or Dmaj? I have not yet developed a solid strumming technique and was thinking it was maybe too early for me to learn funk strumming technique. What are your thoughts on this?

hey dozy, just wanted to pop in and say some of the best music combines different elements together.

in music production, i've learned to appreciate "randomness" because it helps you introduce two kinds of sounds you didn't think about using together and trying to figure out a way to fit in it.

so if you've got a funky rhythmic chord progression, try different ways to play it and don't limit yourself to what you think you "should be doing." it's good to follow rules, but also don't be afraid to break the rules :)

it's not a bad idea to practice funky strumming, even if you can't use it right away. some day you might connect the dots looking back, but you can't connect it looking forward.
