Should I go through the lessons in sequence or go through all the theory videos first? Or are the theory videos in the lesson sequences?
I tried to go through the theory videos all at once... I couldn't take it. The theory lessons are meant to me an extra, We aren't supposed to concentrate on that. I'm in lesson 014, and I have only needed like the first two theory lessons. The important part about the theory is to learn how an scale works, which, by the way, Tomo also teaches in the normal lessons. So yeah, take the lessons by number, if you go down in categories you'll see folders called "Lessons 1-12", "lessons 13_2X" and on and on, so go through those, in order.
I'm telling you this because it took me like a month to figure out how this website works xD.
Also, don't rush through the lessons, stay days, weeks, or even the whole month in a single lesson if needed, specially on the triads lessons, those are like the core of this thing.
Here's a piece of advice: Things won't make sense instantly, and the things you'll be learning will look kinda pointless. But I like to compare Guitar Wisdom with the Karate Kid teacher, when he makes the kid wash his car and it ends up being a super amazing martial art technique? Yeah, that's what learning from Tomo feels like.
So, just be patient, don't put too much on your plate, and remember, as omo says, don't compare and be nice to yourself!
Cheers.
I would recommend thinking of your personal goals first and then choose the videos that might be right for you. if you are a beginner guitarist I would suggest you watch the videos that are gathered under the compilation titled "start here" foundation and technique. that is a good starting point to get familiar with the basics. that should keep you busy for some time. after that it really depends on what you want to learn. are you trying to learn some blues or jazz? there are a lot of videos gathered under that label. if you don't really know where you wanna go I would suggest you just look into some videos(not too many at once or you will just be overwhelmed) and pick out what interests you the most at the moment. that is how I think this site is intended. there are many guitar players with different experience levels and different styles, so there is no real order of lessons. its up to you to find out where to go and if you get stuck somewhere there are always some friendly fellow guitarists on here that will try to give some advice.
If you are not thoroughly familiar with major scales and the Roman Numeral system, you may want to start with Theory videos 1, 2 and 3, while also working on the early lessons in the Foundation & Technique section. Then, try some of the early blues lessons -- playing guitar should be fun!
Think about it: if you were a student at a music college, you would not spend an entire semester on the study of theory, without any playing! Tomo and I think most subscribers will need to switch back and forth between the Theory videos and the Lesson videos, as they progress on this site.
When you begin to work on improvisation, you will likely need to return to the Theory videos, in order to expand your knowledge of scales/modes and other elements that will help you to play interesting melodies over chord changes.
Remember what Tomo would say: Don't worry!
