I love Tomo, and really want to learn something . i am very new to guitar only started to play since Jun 2020, but I am not new to music, I have been playing Piano for a long time. I am struggling to follow the foundation course because there is no course material for me to review or practice my self. I hated to repeat a short section just to get what note he is playing. For example, just a C scale lesson, there are a few ways to play C scale on the neck, but since I have no written material , I had to replay the video quite a few times to see how he plays it. Any recommendation.?
Tomo's lessons are different from other teachers. He does recommend using the notebook (TF Lesson 02). I take notes for each lesson so I can remember the takeaways, often backing up the video 5-60s to try to look again for more details. Sometimes I watch the whole video without stopping first just to take it in, then go back and take some notes.
His whole focus is to learn by experience, not with diagrams and words, which are abstractions of music (one step removed from the real thing). Definitely this presents some challenges as a student, but I think there is a payoff. It forces you to distill the main points.
I use the notebook when I practice to jog my memory for what to play
For TF Lesson 2 - C Major scale, my notebook has:
C String one string - play on B string and sing Do Rey ..., next play in 3 note sequences, each note getting its own 3 note sequence. play each note of the scale preceded by C (do rey, do mi, do fa, do so, ...) for ear training
note: intervals are WW WH HW
play c scale starting on
6 string - E 8, 10, A 7,8,10 D 7,9,10
5 string - A 3,5 D 2,3,5, G 2,4,5
4 string - D 10,12 G 9,10,12 B 10,12, 13
3 string - G 5,7 B 5,6,8 e 5,7,8
note: finger patterns are same when starting on 6 and 5, but because starting on 4,3 strings use the B string (which is a 3rd down from G string instead of a 4th like the other strings) at different parts of the sequence, the patterns are different for each string.
Thank you Jeffrey for spending time to answer my question, really appreciate your detail notes. My strategy going forward is that since Tomo fingers move quite fast , and I knew the chords and music theory from my piano experience, as long as I know what notes he plays I know what chords, scale . I am using note stickers on the guitar fretboards so I know the notes he is playing and it helped me to visualize it .
For what it's worth, I find myself doing something similar to Jeffrey when trying to get everything from the videos. Sometimes I like to do a watch through without pausing, and the first watch is just to get familiar with the concepts and main points. If I need to find specific frets/notes I nearly always have to go back and rewatch/pause a few times.
In particular, during the video on G Maj Scale there's a section where he talks about picking one note and learning all locations for that note on the fretboard. In this video he chooses F as the note, then plays a patter a few times that shows where F is on the fretboard in multiple places. The first time I watched this lesson I thought "there is no way I'm going to remember where those notes are." The second time I watched I thought "that looks pretty fun, but this lesson is about the G Maj scale so why should I bother learning where F is?" The third time I watched that segment at least 20 times, pausing every few seconds. I quickly found where all the notes are on my guitar. I am slow at practicing this section, but it is much easier than I ever expected during the first few times I watched the video lesson.
I think that what I just described to you is a big part of what is special and different about Tomo's approach. In the video lesson I was able to get a brief overview of one way to learn. Then putting this into practice requires me to think slowly and carefully about what I will do, and to do this thinking in a way that does not use the typical shapes and patterns that many guitarists rely on exclusively.
Here is Tomo's comment:
"Thanks so much for subscribing to my Guitar Wisdom. Please watch more of the foundation videos, and watch each one several times, so that you will understand everything. All the important information in each lesson is included in the video.
"I am working on some new beginner/acoustic lessons. They will be published soon, and I think you will enjoy them."
Would it be possible to turn on commenting for each video so we can ask questions specifically?
We tried that approach in the early days of Guitar Wisdom, and unfortunately, it did not work well.
It is simpler and more efficient to post all questions, comments and answers in one place: these FORUMS. There are now 340 discussion threads here, and the SEARCH feature enables users to find posts on specific topics.
so after 2 weeks, I was able to learn all the notes on the fret boards , understood C scale on different strings. Also understood the way Tomo played all the F notes on the neck. Actually after I understood the "formula" , I can play all F, G,A,B,C . So it took me 2 weeks to understand the C scale lesson completely. By not providing any material, maybe it took a little bit longer to learn, but it made me a better learner :). Thank you
Having a single page that maps (and links) to all content is essential, so students (like me) don't get lost, and feel confident that there's a way forward.
Currently, content is organized into sequential sets (Set 1: Lessons 1-12, Set 2: Lessons 13-24, etc.) and portfolios of like-content (Blues, etc.). That means the same lesson can be found in multiple places.
A map/list, such as the one below, may be helpful.
Thanks.
P.S. A site as ambitious as this one should not be primarily designed for viewing on small screens (smartphones).

Thanks for your input. We are working on a transition to a new site, which will be designed to streamline guitar players' navigation on the various paths to wisdom.
Meanwhile, this site is not, and does not pretend to be, "primarily designed for viewing on small screens." We believe that our subscribers with access to larger screens are learning the most from Guitar Wisdom.
