I love learning chords by scale degree!
I write down what is on each string just like the video notes, but include 'x' where muted.
I notice that in the beginner series Tomo has started adding (M).
It is also very efficient for paper instead of charts or TAB:
G13 R x b7 3 13 x
C9 x R 3 b7 9 5
I am learning the chords musically rather than visually which is what Tomo wants.
I noticed also that in the beginner series Tomo has been calling out which frets to play, but I had a negative reaction because that skips the step of figuring out where to play based on the scale degree. However, I can see how people might not stick with it if they have to learn too much at first to get anywhere.
What I am naturally learning without trying is where the intervals are across strings.
So when I want to play I-vi I know that R for vi is up two strings, out one fret or down one string, in two frets.
This is also helping my melodic playing as I can hear the line in my head and play it without hunting. Slowly though!
Before Tomo I learned a bunch of songs but hit a wall. The chords never sounded all that great and I couldn't play much different than what I memorized. Scales improved my technique, but didn't have much to do with musicality. Since signing on to guitar wisdom, I stopped playing songs, but I spend a *lot* more time with my guitar and I'm becoming intimate with how it works musically. More and more I play what I hear in my head. Very much delayed gratification with big rewards! Thank you Tomo!
Here is Tomo's reply:
"Thanks so much for subscribing to my Guitar Wisdom. I am happy to learn that you are enjoying my new Beginner Series videos, and that you like the notation for chords in this Series. Many beginners do not know the names of notes yet, and they need fret numbers to find their way. They will study and learn the degrees eventually. My main focus is NOT to teach patterns or tunes. That style of teaching is easy to do, and it sells books and subscriptions, but students do not learn anything! Helping you to find 'musical freedom' is my goal!"
