There are triads hidden in A half-whole diminished (in descending order):
F# major triad: F# A# C#
D# major triad: D# (F## aka G) A#
C major triad: C E G
A major triad: A C# E
This makes it easier (for me) to spice up the A blues situation with the out sounding flavors (without thinking too much).
Also, knowing the hidden triad situation makes it easier to figure out the jazz fusion guys lick at about 3:40
it's a pattern of M3, R, b7, b3 of one triad then going to the next triad a minor third down. However, it looks more tricky than it is because Tomo is using different chord forms to stay within the same general area on the fretboard.
