I've been playing many years, mostly R&B. I never specifically studied Jazz. If I pull up a nice jazz piece, I just play the 1st position major scale, then jump down into the minor pentatonic and off I go. It usually sounds about right. I do need to work more on targeting for the changes more. I generally rely on my ear to guide me which sometimes works, sometimes not. I at least try to get a feel for it and resolve on the "I" but I certainly don't keep up with most of the changes perfectly.
For a newbie into the jazz world, can anyone recommend any Tomo videos (or other lessons) so I can get off to a good start- not sure where to start honestly. Should I focus on the major scale- or any particular modes, is harmony more important e.g., targeting changes, etc. Jazz overall seems generally slower, more intentional and technical in nature. Bass and Piano seem to take the front seat unlike Rock where the guitar is the hero.
