Hello, Suddenly, I became interested in guitar, so I visited this site.
I want to learn the guitar, but I have some problems with my hands. When I was a student, I was hit by a ball and broke my ring finger(left hand).
The condition is similar to this figure 1 (https://www.assh.org/handcare/condition/mallet-finger)
It doesn't interfere daily life, but my fingers don't straighten completely and don't move back much. So, I wonder if I can learn the guitar even with finger injuries like this.
My English is not good, so I don't know if my question was delivered well.
Here is Tomo's comment:
"Thank you so much! I don't know the answer, but you should try! There are many ways to play. Maybe you can create your own. First step: Don't worry!"
Hi KNP
I am 50 when I was 20 and had just started guitar I broke my left middle finger badly and it had to be operated on. Actually it looks like a bad case of mallet finger. It has a metal plate in and has calcified badly. If I could send a picture I would. Needless to say it is like I have one very large knuckle. My mobility is not the same as a typical hand . I used to play an open d chord 2nd inversion ,so do mi (which you will learn) by barring my first finger across the first three strings and playing the d with my third finger . I created my own way as Tomo suggested. I have played guitar ever since in bands for many years and mortals wrongly thought I was awseome haha. There are many other things which will get in the way such as rushing to learn and being hard on yourself damaged hand or not.I think these things have set me back much more than my injury.Tomo,s teaching has been helping so much. Ive been revisiting guitar for the last few years much more seriously and can use my finger much more effectively by practicing proper technique and revisiting fundamentals. I hope you can manage to learn to play despite the mallet finger as its a lifelong gift to be engaged with music. This is my personal experience obviously .Good luck.
Thanks! I will try!
