I've been noticig that struggle more with my ear in guitar than in singing.
I started playing guitar and singing at the same time (with no prior knowledge of music), and when it comes to my voice, I can find the right pitch instantly, I can follow the singer and also mimic the instruments, I can make the song lower or higher in order to match my pitch, etc.
But when it comes with guitar, it takes me a lot of time to, for example, learn a song by ear. I've noticed that I can understand in which string the note is being played, and I can find the fret after a few times listening, but that's the problem, I would like to be able to play something back after only listening to it once, just like I do with my voice.
I think I just need to get more knowledge in guitar theory? Or maybe I just have to play more in order for my ear to feel more connected with my fingers?
Do I just need to get my ear used to my guitar?
hey bud, you need ear training, by the sounds of it.
these things take time. i'm not sure how long you've been at this, or how often you practice. if you've tried all of this, definitely share some of those details so we know where you're at and can help! :)
find a spot on the fretboard, sing it out loud, and then play the note to see if you got it right. i can't remember exactly which video tomo recommended this, but it was important to rest. pick a spot, sing it, play it, rest, then repeat.
once you're comfortable there, play a 12 bar blues and practice singing the guitar solo with your voice.
Hey, Thanks for answering.
I can already do what you said. These few days I've been trying to play Lucille by B.B King by ear, and it took me like 30 minutes to get correctly the first lick. But I can sing the whole guitar part in the song without needing much effort.
As for the first question, I've been playing guitar and singing for a year, been in this course for around 6 months and I'm in lesson 18. I play for atleast 3 hours every single day.
Here is Tomo's comment:
"Thanks so much for subscribing to my Guitar Wisdom. This is a very common question, so please, don’t feel bad at all. All you need to is to get used to hearing all those basic intervals. Try using only one string and one finger (side by side), so that you can really hear the intervals.
"Watch more Guitar Wisdom theory and ear training videos. Train your ear slowly (patiently). That’s all. We all need to do this, so that we can get relative perfect pitch."
