Are triads more important as an interesting sounding chord when playing rhythm or a strong sounding note when soloing? Or both?

Please expound on triad usage as a guide to outlining upper extensions for chords.
In other words , triads outlining upper extension notes to improvise with when playing over a chord. What are the principles?
