I was puzzled when Tomo held up the music note paper with
R M3 5 b7
5 b7 R M3
M3 5 b7 R
b7 R M3 5
When in the lesson on the guitar he showed us from string 4 to 1/D to E
b7 M3 5 R
R 5 b7 M3
M3 b7 R 5
5 R M3 b7
I can't find any logic to the note paper, what am I missing?
Thanks for subscribing to Guitar Wisdom. This note from the lesson page will provide an answer to your question:
IMPORTANT: The "top" note, in each column on the sheet that Tomo displays in this lesson, is the "top" (highest) note of the chord, which is on the first string. So, if you read each column from the bottom up, you will see that each inversion matches what Tomo plays (0:20 - 1:28) on Strings 4, 3, 2, 1, and what is noted in the subtitles.
Thank you George,
Thank you for the prompt answer, I see the relationship now. It must be a cultural thing. In the lesson intervals were presented in rows. I tried reading the rows backwards but didn't try try columns.
The column presentation does make a good mental overlay going from the picture to the fretboard.
