Hi TF
First I want to acknowledge loving your work and playing!
I was wondering where you suggest I learn the more colorful sounds in blues soloing. Ive seen basic augmented and switching bt pentatonic and chordal notes. I know there’s so much more.
I have been playing by the chords for a while but I want incorporate more of what the notes that you’ll show us at the end of a lesson (without breaking it down).
I think that can make for a great couple of lessons that I would definitely enjoy.
Hi,
I couldn’t possibly give as good an answer as Tomo, but I know that it sounds like he uses a lot of chord substitution to get those colors. From what I hear, he’s implying cords that aren’t there to tie his lines together.
For example, here’s a common progression:
1…4… 1… 1… / 4… 4…1… 1… / 5…4…1…5… a 12 bar blues 4 beats per measure
If you want to imply other sounds then one way is to do a “tritone substitution”. Please see below:
I…IV…I…I.bV7.
When you play the last 1 you share two beats between that chord and the bV7. This leads into the IV chord, so try to resolve into these chord tones.
It’s only one way, but the secret appears to be in harmony. Jazz progressions too! He also has some videos on diatonic triads that can bring color to your blues from 7ths to 13ths in the theory section.
Finally, you could also listen to players that play colorful ideas you like and analyze what they are doing so you can recreate it any time you want using theory and ear training
I hope this helps you out until he responds!
