Hey guitarists.
I've been playing guitar for 2 years now and I've become good at understanding music theory, relative pitch, and learning songs by ear. I mostly play rhythm and practice my timing more than lead playing.
I've started to learn more about lead and with that, I've come across the idea of playing changes. The way I understand it is that over every chord, you play the notes of its harmony. i.e key of A playing 1-4-5 I'd play A - C# - E over the 1, D - F# - A over the 4, and E - G# - B over the 5.
How should I visualize the fretboard in a way that I can see what notes I'll be playing? What I've been doing is playing the chord shape for the current chord I'm on in the progression as an arpeggio but this starts to sound boring after the 2nd or 3rd time around. What should I do to get better at this? I've watched some youtube videos on it but everyone else seems to be really fast at recognizing where the notes are.
