1st I’d like to say I love your Guitar Wisdom lessons. I’m recently retired and picking up guitar once again trying to advance my playing ability. Your perspective on how to approach things has helped me understand several things that I’ve struggled with over the years.
My question is when looking at the Dorian scale does the Root change with the starting point of the scale? Is Re, Mi Fa now M2, M3, 4 or do you start over with R M2, M3?
Hi Tom., my understanding is that root remains the same at the dorian scale, the only thing that changes is M3 to b3 and M7 to b7
Why do we call it major 2nd not just 2nd?
Here is Tomo's comment:
"Thanks so much for subscribing to my Guitar Wisdom. Think of Dorian as the 2nd mode of a Major scale. You can start from any root: R 2 b3 4 5 6 b7. The only differences between a Major scale (Ionian) and a Dorian scale are b3 & b7. So . . .
C Dorian:
C D Eb F G A Bb C
G Dorian
G A Bb C D E F G
. . . and so on."
