I have been playing my guitar for about two years. And have learned so much from Tomo but I've hit a brick wall and I am wondering if i'm going to make it through. It seems I'm dead on arrival with sight reading. I know the notes. I can read the notes (slow but I can read them) now my problem is i keep missing notes with my left had or string(s) on my right hand strumming. I've been trying to do the duet Sea to Sea and I can't seem to go through once on the 1st or second guitar without errors and then if I try to do 80bpm I'm a wreck. I've spent at least 8 hours even going slow. Am I doomed?
Just part of the process my friend. I know from experience as well how frustrating this can be. My only advice as someone else who is going through this, is to set a timer for twenty to twenty-five minutes and practice only during that time. Once the timer goes off take a break, refresh your mind and go back at it if you like. Avoid practicing while you are heated and frustrated. The metronome should be at a very slow pace (60bpm or lower) and just focus on completing as much review/work during your practice window, avoid overly obsessing with perfection as that will come with time and it will stall you from moving forward. In the end, it's all about slow and methodical practice and continually marching forward. I know it can be frustrating at times, but don't expect too much of yourself. I tend to warm up my picking hand before working on the book, because I know that that is what handicaps me most of the time. Either way good luck and dont give up!
