Tomo Fujita Guitar Wisdom

Hi,

Searching from the search menu for "metronome" finds 7 videos, but does not pinpoint any lesson on using a metronome. It finds some lessons, but you need to spend some time looking through videos. Any suggestions on a way to find metronome lessons?

Searching the Forums did find some threads that were helpful. However, there is a reference to lesson 11 and 12, but no reference to a lesson series to be able to watch 11 or 12? Does anyone know which lesson category these are in?

My search is because in TF026 at around 4:40 Tomo uses a metronome, and is clearly playing on non-metronome clicks. So he's counting one, click-two, three, click-four. I always played each click as a beat. What is the purpose of this use of a metronome?

The search issue may be a windows chrome problem. I had better luck with my iPad. BL01 showed up.

I also found 012, it's FT23 (012) Practice Ideas, Gear Settings.

Okay, for those keeping track, one more update. My bad, the search from Windows Chrome works correctly. When the results show up, you must roll your cursor over each of the 7 search hits. It'll then bring up a text box with a description of the Video, and the descriptions found in my search for "metronome" contain the word metronome. You just have to watch the whole video because there aren't time stamps to indicate whats taught and at what time.

I think there are a couple of reasons teachers recommend to use the metronome on 2 and 4.

First, it allows you a freer swing feel. You can think of it as a virtual snare or hi-hat and play ahead or behind the beat without getting too "robotic". When every beat is always equally spaced it loses some humanity. Even though, I suppose classical players would disagree.

Second, it makes YOU entirely responsible for the one. Someone once said, if you land the one, everything else will fall into place, or something to that effect. If you use an artificially accented sound to identify the one, like a click track, while you are at an early stage of learning, you are not drinking the form into your being and psyche; you are just tasting, or sampling, and not committing to knowing it in fullness.

It is difficult at first and I struggle a lot with it. But when you DO practice a song later on with a recording or backing track, you are much more confident knowing where you are and less likely to get lost and less dependent on the track to reel you back into the form.

I also look forward to a metronome video because I have difficulty jumping into the 2 and 4 feel immediately. Every beat or 1 and 3 are no problem, but something in my head doesn't handle the missing 1 on 2 and 4 until after a few tries. I'm not used to being responsible for the one I think!
