What is the concept of side by side? Tomo mentions it briefly in a couple of videos, but I havent seen him demonstrate it in detail. It seems related to scale practise on two adjacent strings, but how do I do it?
What he means is to play the scale all on one string with the notes side-by-side with each other, instead of breaking the scale up over several strings, which obscures the intervals between the notes.
By playing side by side, you see clearly what the interval is (whole step or half step) between any two given notes in the scale.
What he's trying to push against is the way so many guitar players just learn shapes and patterns (eg for a major scale) with no understanding of the the intervals that make up the scale, which creates a huge handicap because if you don't understand those intervals, you're going to have a hard time understanding chords.

Ah, ok, thanks for clarifying that!
