Hello. I live in Palm Springs CA which has a very dry climate. I like to keep my acoustic out on a stand with a sponge humidifier inserted. Since the guitar is not kept in a case do you think the humidifier helps? I would like to buy a higher quality acoustic but I want to keep it out on a stand so I pick it up daily; however, I’m concerned about the dry climate. Any thoughts? I appreciate any help you can provide. Take Care Brian
Hi Brian,
I live in CO which is also very dry. I have a few acoustics, one of which is almost too nice for me to own, so humidity is something I closely monitor. To answer your question, your humidifier isn't hurting anything, but it's also not helping much. As much as we love having our guitars out, they are happiest when they are kept in the case with a humidification system of sorts. I use these https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/OH1--oasis-oh-1-guitar-humidifier and "water" my guitars every Monday with distilled water. If your guitar is dry, you'll have to "water" a few times a week until she's happy. I also keep hygrometers in the cases and set push notifications if they drop below the manufacturer's humidity recommendations.
If you like having your guitar out, use a humidifier in the room and put a hygrometer near your guitar to ensure she's happy. That said, I think you'll be good if your guitar spends more time in the case. (i.e., when you're done playing for the day) Just remember that your case will take some time to absorb moisture, so keep it closed as soon as you take your guitar out and keep refilling your humidifiers until everything settles. I hope that helps.
Take care,
Shawn
