Tomo Fujita Guitar Wisdom

Hi all, I'm new to Guitar Wisdom and even though I have been playing guitar for almost 20 years, there are some things I've always avoided like ear training. Now I'm finally working on it and trying to stop learning using tabs but I'm finding it hard to trust my ear. I've been trying to learn a couple of songs by ear and I have been mostly accurate but I keep finding myself looking for the tab just to make sure I'm not missing anything or that what I've picked up is correct.
Can anybody give me any advice in breaking this habit and trusting myself more?

Hi Martin. Are you trying to learn by ear with chords or lead lines (solo or riffs)? I have been playing for decades and most of what I've learned is by ear. With chords, I would suggest the following: find an easy song which not too many chord changes (to start). Listen and imagine what chord is being played. A hint would be the bass note you hear because the chord will most likely be based on that. Try and listen to what other notes are played on each chord. If you focus, you will hear some of the other notes. That will tell you what chord it might be. Do the same for each chord. You'll know when you got it right. Like Master Tomo says: Be patient. I started doing just that, listening to more chord-centric songs (like Father and Son and What's Up) and that has really boosted my confidence as I was able to get the bass notes and overall chords as accurate as possible before then going to the chord chart. I was glad to find that I didn't need much correcting from there so that has really helped me out.

Hey Martin. That's great. Sounds like your on the right track. Keep doing that and pretty soon, it will be second nature to you. You will be able to picture the chords as you're listening. Very happy for you.
