Hello,
I have been a member for about a year. I do have some questions about how I should be learning from this website. These questions might come off as stupid, please bear with me. I will explain my story and then the questions.
My story: I joined a year ago from today. I finished the beginner series in the first week. I skipped the sight reading series. I then got to the first video of the next series, which is Music theory 1 Major scale.
I got to this video "Music theory 1 Major scale" and everyday for 30 minutes a day for the past year, I have been studying this one video. Each day my practice routine is. Play the chromatic scale. Play the major scale in a new key. Play the major scale in all 5 positions on the neck. Play a lick in all 5 positions on the neck (for example 3,4,7,2,1). Practice the lick with different variations of rhythm. This takes me 30 minutes to do as I practice a new lick each day.
Questions:
It has been a year now of me playing guitar, Is my practice routine actually helping me grow, or what do you recommend to change about the practice routine? Should I move on to a new video after I complete the key that the video is in? how do I know when I finish a video? Like I said, I've been on the Music theory 1 Major scale video for a year now, is that going too slow? also do we have to watch the sight reading series?
thank you!
My goal is to be able to improvise very well for hours on end.
Thank you for sharing! Good job working on Music Theory & Sight-reading section.
How about these ideas for you.
1) Technique Part (Help your performance)
2) Music Theory & Ear Training (Able to hear chords & melody in depths)
3) Triad & 7th chords (for harmony & soloing)
Daily Routine:
1) Chromatic scale exercise: 1212 3212 3432 1234

2) Root 3rd 7th Swing Groove

3) Triad Inversions

These practice routine has to be around 15 minutes to 20 minutes.
Do not practice more than 30 minutes. Focus less time and focus deeply.
Don't do too much Major Scale on 5 positions because you think about position too much!
You can practice same phrase in many positions ...great way. But you are thinking more intervals.
Now you pick song form. Blues, Jazz Blues, or pop songs or jazz standard.
Any good chord progressions.
Make sure that you can play triads over each chord.
You should be able to play 3 inversions from any inversions. (123 set strings)
