I have been following this website for over a year now, but am struggling with making any progress. I think the issue is because I am not sure what I am supposed to be learning exactly from the videos.
If we take the video below for example
https://tomovhxtv.vhx.tv/videos/theory-10-minor-pentatonic
Theory 10 minor pentatonic.
Tomo shows us some solo first (i'm not sure if he is improvising it on the spot or it is rehearsed) and then he explains A minor pentatonic starting on the 5th fret. He says don't think of shape's and think of the notes. Then he shows us the C minor pentatonic starting on the 8th fret and explains that Guitar is the only instrument where you can move shapes, but don't think of shapes. Then Tomo says don't learn the pentatonic scale for every key, that's too much. Just do maybe 2 key's, he drops some more wisdom and then Tomo then plays another solo over the chord progression, which I believe is D, G, A minor.
Now what are the action steps that we are supposed to take from this video?
If I wanted to I could just work on this one video for 100 years everyday for 10 hours a day, since there is infinite possibilities for solo's and chord progressions using the A minor pentatonic right? But I don't think that was the intention. I would like to understand what do we now need to do to improve? It seems like the video is hinting that we are supposed to use the knowledge gained to play a Solo like Tomo does at the end of the video? But I am not sure If I am correct, or what are the steps we need to do to move forward
Out of all this information he gives, I feel very overwhelmed. I feel like there should be a path to the next video or something like that, otherwise we could spend our entire lives just practicing with A minor pentatonic.
Now I will give what I did to practice the theory in the video, using my best guess on what action steps we should take.
I gave myself 5 days and split each day for each pentatonic position. Each day I would play the pentatonic position so for example Day 1 was the G shape pentatonic. I would play it in 2 keys, so A minor and E minor. Then. I would play 3 licks in that position in each key. I would draw the shapes on a piece of paper over and over until I have it sort of memorized. Is this along the right path?
Thank you so much for sharing your view.
If you feel that way, you need to fill something between this video, this subject.
Action steps... how much do you understand?
This case.... you need to know...
1) Notes on the fretboard more.
2) Triads & 7th chords.
3) Listen more soloing examples.
It's simple.
Need to make your paths with foundation.
Please watch "Theory" section so that you understand scales & intervals without shapes.
More Ear Training.
Please watch more triad related videos so that you will know chords with intervals / degrees.
I will work on more steps in Guitar Wisdom.
Thank you so much for your comment.
PS, One subject, you can stay two weeks.
For pentatonic playing.
Try this.
G minor pentatonic on G blues.
Play open string, 3rd string.
0 fret = Root = G
3rd fret = b3 = Bb
5th fret = 4th = C
7th fret = 5th = D
10th fret = b7 = A
You can play just R b3 4 5 ... then play them a little rhythmically like a conversation.
This part is... best to listen Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway... Vocal part!
Derek Trucks, John Mayer, Chris Buck... all did same thing.
They don't listen guitar players, they listen more vocalists!
No memorization!
Do only one key first!
