I've just watched the major and minor pentatonic vidoes in the theory section. I'm just wondering what the most effective way to learn moving from one pentatonic scale to another over a chord progression is?
Is is best to learn the actual notes of the scales so you know how they link together that way? Or is there a way you can link them together using the scale degrees? Or is it simpy a case of practicing the different scales all over the fretboard to a point where you just know where each one is?
Any advice would be appreciated :)
In the end you want to know/hear it all. Scale degrees of a chord with respect to its root, and also its scale degrees with respect to the scale you are harmonizing. It takes knowing a bit of theory but after that you only need your guitar as Tomo likes to emphasise. If you know scale degrees and intervals and chord construction formulas you dont need to memorize any more than that. You pick up the guitar and find it and after enough practice you just see it. If you are also working on ear training with this (i didnt and that was a huge mistake) there are no obstacles to anything. I really like Tomo's no paper, no tabs approach...just put some small effort into some basic theory directly on the guitar.
Example: chord progression comes to a C chord. All the chord tones work. C E G. 1 3 5 of C major scale. You want more tones to solo which are not a par of the triad. Well, there are 9 more. See which you like. C chord is a 1 chord in C major so you can add notes from C major scale. C is a 4 chord in G major so you can use notes of G major (or C lydian if you prefer that viewpoint). C is also a 5 chord in F major. So you can use F major scale (or C mixolydian if you prefer that viewpoint).
Great question! Thank you for sharing! Listen more singers like 1) Donny Hathaway "Live" 2) Aretha Franklin "Live at Filmore East" 3) Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Wilson Picket, Ann Peebles... Technically we can say that "Mixing Major & minor pentatonics" but truth is many great guitar players who plays with soul... not listen guitar players! We all listened great singers!
