Especially now it’s adding the 7th there’s more inversions like there are 4 inversions now. And Inneed to keep track of 4 notes in the chord now and know their relationship. I also feel like this makes it harder to visualize the underlying scale of the chord ?
I don’t currently understand how to relate things with degree. Is the degree with respect to the major scale of that key ? Or of the notes of the major scale of that chord ? How do I start thinking in degrees, and how can a chord be a degree ?
When will I get to the point when I can see everything clearly ?
There are two aspects of a scale degree used. When you harmonize a scale you do it in intervals of a 3rd (minor or major 3rds) skipping every other note. And you can harmonize starting on every degree of that scale. But once you get a chord by doing this you describe it using degrees in relation to that note being your 1. So, C major is CDEFGABC or in numbers 12345671. Build a chord from the 2nd degree youbget DFA or in numbers 246. Now if you make D your 1 to describe the chord you got it would give you 1 b3 5. So Dm is a chord built from 2nd degree of C major scale but in relation to its own root note D it consists of scale degrees 1 b3 5. For 7th chords, same principle DFAC is built from 2nd degree of C major scale which is D and in numers it is 2461. Now take your D as 1 and your chord has scale degrees 1 b3 5 b7 in relation note D. So Dmin7 is a chord built from 2nd degree of a C major scale and scale degrees 1 b3 5 b7 are given in relation to the root of the chord D.
Shorter answer. Triad snd 7th chords scale degrees are given with respect to root note of the chord. But the root note itself can be a given scale degree of some other scale. C triad is always 135 or CEG with respect to note C and C major scale and is a 1 chord in C major key. But C is a 4th scale degree of a G major scale. And C major chord is a 4 chord in a key of G major.
Thank you for sharing! You really don't need to remember anything! First of all, you don't need to memorize anything! I think you need to stay 3 notes triad inversions for a little more long time so you really understand triads with many chord progressions & possible positions. Then 7th chord (R 3 5 7) You can learn top 4 notes.... G7 for instance, b7 M3 5 R ... R 5 b7 M3... M3 b7 R 5 ...5 R M3 b7...
Learn these with super slow pace... at lease two weeks... Then you will get it! Thank you so much!
