I'm just getting started with Guitar Wisdom. There is a lot (I mean a LOT!) of foundational work here. I understand the importance of it, but I could work on scales and triads for months and years (I actually have spent years on these things in my guitar life). I don't want to spend all of my practice time on fundamentals. I'd like to have some musical things to work on l so I can enjoy making music as well.

How do you recommend combining these things for an enjoyable and productive learning process?

I am a king of foundation guy! For example, John Mayer! He got so much foundation! That's why he is still improving now!

I would say, you need to record your self more often so that you can really hear musically how much your triads are speaking smoothly? Triads are great test! I would spend one topic for a long time so next one will be a little faster.

1) Try to play C triads with 3 ways. then try it with F triad 3 ways. Then mix C & F triads... No problem?
If you have to wait 2-3 seconds to find the right chord... then Not Enough!

2) Practice a lot of R 3 7 Swing Groove. This will teach you so much harmony of songs and your left hand muting skill.
Highly recommend to learn "Jazz Standard" section.

3) Blues music! Listen a lot of BB King to any soulful vocals.

I would say.... at least 90 days for foundation then you can mix up things with music.
Transcribe music by ears. Avoid YouTube backing tracks etc.
Make your own rhythm guitar track by looper or recording.

Thank you, Tomo. I am definitely planning to take more time with my foundation work this time around. I want to fully internalize and be in command of what I'm working on before moving on. I think I've moved on too quickly in the past. I am enjoying the triads practice. I've been using simple chord progressions like a I VI II V to challenge me to play them through all of the triad positions. I'm working on not looking at my fingers when playing so I have a feel for the intervals between triads and notes. I've also been doing some blues lessons to keep things interesting while I build the foundation. After triads, I want to work on 7th chord inversions and arpeggios so I can begin improvising with a command of the fretboard under my fingers.

Best way is to focus on foundation with limited time management so that you don't spend too much.

Every session is gonna be around 10-15 minutes.

Then you need to do your own proficiency test like some of TFGW proficiency test.

Triad inversions are so important! Make sure your know 3 things... C E G / R M3 5 / Do Mi So... Name of notes, intervals (theory) Do Mi So (Ear Training)

Then apply to chord progressions like G D Em C on 123 set strings or 234 set strings... (345 set and 456 set)
I have practiced more 345 set & 456 set so I have learned my left hand pressure control & guitar setup (Intonation)

Good job! Great! 1234 set 7th chord inversions. Major7, minor7 & Dom7... Very useful!
