hi i was wondering, how can i tell when i have a sufficient understanding of a scale and can move on to a new one. many thanks.
at the moment i can sing the notes and solfege fowards and backwards and i am using the single note scale to find melodies from songs i know

1) Theory part, you need to check how much do you really understand about Major scale & other types of scales?
Even you know so well, but if you cannot hear any musical phrases over chord progressions (Ear Training)... then just knowledge is good and need to apply them into much as performance.
2) You can certainly try some test. Can you play C Ionian scale for two bars & C Dorian scale for two bars? Any set strings?
Single string soloing or in same position vertically... can you control these two scales?
3) Can you play blues really well with a lot of singing quality and make sure you can play something special over IV chord and V chord, include triads, chord tone etc.
You can check from a few different angles to see how much do you really understand.
