Tomo,
I subscribed today as a way to say thank you!
I started playing guitar when I was 13, and I've been playing guitar for 30 years now. I spent a lot of time developing my technical skill, and I got great at being able to play the songs I love. I think I'm a pretty good guitar player. But, while I was busy doing that, I pretty much skipped all the parts about becoming a good musician. I had instructors who would talk about that stuff and I'd kinda listen to it, but spending time drilling that stuff was boring and I wanted to get to the music! So, I ended up in a place where I'm technically really proficient on the guitar, so I can play the songs I love. And, if things are all laid out like on a piano I can mostly understand the music theory. But if I do something or see something on guitar, and you ask me what the heck that was, I wouldn't have any idea what I just did! Thank goodness I have a good ear!
About a week ago, I saw your video on YouTube about major triads and their inversions on the BGe strings. I decided to take your advice and I spent about a week just slowly playing those and internalizing the Do Mi So, Mi So Do, and So Do Mi sounds, and finding the R 3 5, 3 5 R, and 5 R 3 triad groups on those strings. I worked on being able to easily do that for the E, A, D, G, and B major triads. And you know what? This one simple thing has changed my whole world.
All of a sudden I understand so much more about the songs I've been playing. Yesterday I was playing a song I've been playing from memory for years and all of a sudden I realized that I had gone from just knowing where to put my fingers to make the sound I wanted to make, to actually understanding what I was doing. I had to stop playing because I couldn't believe what had just happened.
It's a pretty unbelievable feeling. I've gone from feeling like a guitar player to finally feeling like I'm starting to become a musician. Thank you so much, this is opening up a whole new world for me. I really appreciate the knowledge you're sharing, and I hope you know how much people appreciate the hard work you're doing.
Thanks again, and I can't wait to keep going!
- Eric
Very true. I went through a lot of online resources and Tomo is one of only a few who, for me, teach the way guitar should be taught. Currently enjoying the minor blues video which is great for 7th chords and groove practice. Thank you Tomo.
Thank you so much!
