Hi Tomo,

Before joining GW I watched the super simple triad on 123 strings and loved it. It’s helped me memorize the fretboard, taught chords, inversions and chord progression all in one. Fantastic. So I’ve been trying not to move on too quickly and have gotten it to a point where I can easily go around the circle of 5th playing all inversions and now I’m ready to move onto other strings. I like the idea of not trying to just use shapes and actually know the “what and why” you are playing.

My question is I want to know what I should be thinking when I play triads because I’m not sure if it’s a short cut but I’ve noticed I just remember the 3 shapes and that root shape has the root note on the 3rd string. 1st inv has root note on 1st string and 2nd inv has root note on 2nd string. Knowing this I can play through triads quite quickly.

So is this short cut ok or what should I be programming my brain with as I play? Just trying to get on top of bad habits before I move onto other strings.

A few suggestions. Try not to memorize them and try not to think as shapes, anything seems easy... avoid them!

Another word, learn as slow as you can so you will hear more triad inversions before you touch your guitar.

When you are practicing, you should think notes, intervals and Do Mi So... 3 things.

When you are playing, performing, just to hear THAT sound clearly without thinking those 3 but you need to hear any inversions in 2 seconds! If it takes more than 2 seconds then go back to study triads and change a few different keys... Like F, Bb, D, A, E etc...
Try not go anything seems difficult or too mathematic ways like... too many chords!

You need to hear each inversions and not need to have any grip to find out.
You want to avoid any short cuts if you want to improve your playing abilities.

No programming or no memorization required.
Simply slow learning process is the nest!

So be familiar with those triad inversions without any expectations.
This way, you can learn things much faster & so smooth.

So when I run through intervals I should be including ear as well, thinking:
G 1st, sing me so do, sing B D G and then play?

Definitely! Learning everything as much as you can.

So when you are learning, think about name of those notes, intervals & Do Re Mi (Singing!)
Ear Training & Fretboard Harmony in same time so when you hear music, you can hear those colors!

You can hear it as 1st inversion clearly... Think B D G = M3 5 R... You can hear M3 bottom, 5th middle,. Root Top!
