Hello quick question,
If you are not supposed to learn triads with shapes, but with your ear and singing do mi so then how are you supposed to know when to use a specific triad over a chord in a progression. For example, if you are playing over a g chord in a progression and you want to use a g major triad, is your fingers supposed to just know where it is, or do you need to know where a g note is near where you are playing to play a g triad from there. Is this something that comes naturally after being able to hear different triad inversions before you play them (when practicing triads), and then you can reproduce this sound when improvising by hearing the chord or something. Sorry I am a little confused hopefully you understand my problem thank you 🙏.

Basically bottom line is not think shape first! Learn super slowly each triad inversion so if you think G .. you can think 3 different ways... Let's say you think / hear G 1st inversion on top 123 strings then go to C triad root position on top 123 set strings, When you practice these, slowly to think a) Name of notes b) Intervals c) Do Re Mi (Sing these notes) so you combine fretboard theory & Ear Training when you are practicing. Then you can hear/think same thing on 234 set strings, not you can hear same notes/same intervals but more warmer tone!
If you practice a lot of triads, this will become so natural,. but if you think shape to move around triads then you will hit a big wall where you feel that you can improve anymore. That's a huge difference someone using shapes or truly understand about triads.
Great question!
Thank you so much!
