Greetings Tomo and fellow forum members! 10 years ago I tore a ligament in my picking hand. In the last couple years it has become problematic for me.
After consulting with multiple hand surgeons and researching carefully, I've decided it's worth the risk to have a repair done.
Unfortunately for me, it will keep my right hand off the guitar for the better part of 3 months! Devotion to guitar has been a passion of mine for many years. So, I'm concerned about the extended lay off period.
I'd like to ask for all of your good intentions for a speedy recovery, and I'm open to your advice on how to maintain and even improve during this rather extensive recovery.
On the livestream someone mentioned the book "Zen Guitar" (I couldn't find the poster's name) but I've ordered the book! Thank you!
On my own, I decided to get a 'Performer Guitar Stand" to hold my guitar, so I can at least use my left hand for practice (fingering & naming triads, arpeggios, etc.)
Tomo has recommended watching GW videos and listening to songs to develop my ear. I plan on doing both.
I also plan on following GW and forum posts.
I appreciate your good intentions and welcome your feedback!
Thanks!
Ken (Older Dude)
Ken,
Thank you for sharing your personal hand journey.
Don't worry! Sometime we should calmly wait the storm will passing through.
You will not loose anything that you have gained and you have been working.
I would do pick 3 records to listen.
Don't worry about guitar practicing!
You can watch my Guitar Wisdom video but this time you watch more than 3 times when you watch one video.
Don't worry about your left hand... because guitar playing, you need to use both hands together so I highly don't recommend to work only one side of hands. If you only fretted... you will gain heavy attack from your left fingers.
Listen same music more times & you can watch certain GW lesson videos more times!
This way, music, ideas will stay inside of your body & mind!
I am thinking your fast recovery!
Tomo
Thanks Tomo! I will definitely take your recommendations to heart. I'm open to a recommendation regarding records to listen to. You have an idea of where I'm at, so if you have a good idea, I'm all ears!
You're very welcome! In general, what type music, what artist do you listen? Funny... my stereo is broken! So I haven't listen any records. I used to listen 3 cassette tapes that my karate teacher made... 1) Blues 2) Medium tempo 3) Ballad (all jazz guitar)
Those tapes taught me so deeply! Then I decides to listen Joe Pass!
Maybe you can pick 3 records from here... I wonder which you pick?
Charlie Christian "Genius of electric guitar"
Barney Kessel "Volume One”
Joe Pass "Virtuoso”
Joe Pass & Herb Ellis "Two For The Road”
Wes Montgomery "Incredible Jazz Guitar " "Full House" "Live at the Half Note”
Kenny Burrell "Midnight Blue”
Jim Hall "Undercurrent (with Bill Evans),
Grant Green “Grant’s first stand” “Green Street” “Feelin The Sprit”
Thank you.
Tomo
Oh, so sorry to hear about your injury Ken. The human body is a testimony of Gods creation and your healing post surgery will be successful. Wishing you all the best brother. Just chill and listen to music man, use it as a time of inspiration, stay strong brother!
Best wishes to you Ken! Hope everything will go well for you and you will get back to playing guitar in no time!
By the way, there is this channel on youtube called Scott's bass lessons and the bass player himself has a hand injury. It is probably a different situation than yours, but he may have something interesting to say about having a hand injury and playing guitar nonetheless. Hope this helps.
