I never had a lot of interest in Steve Vai - his records bored me. But this solo is pretty deep, IMO. And what may be the most impressive is how he uses everything about the electric guitar - including obviously the whammy bar - to be expressive - quite beautifully expressive. Where does one learn these techniques? I mean later of course - Steve Vai started out like everyone in this group - woodshedding triads.
Steve Vai is not my cuppa either, but he’s clearly for me, transcended the instrument to express what is inside of himself. So, you could probably give him a shoebox with strings at this point and he be able to express something unique from within. Maybe he’s an example of when the instrument of language becomes poetry, except his voice is expressed through the instrument in myriad ways. We’re all on this journey and I have a tendency to get crestfallen due to time horizon! But, look at him, he’s getting older too!
he's 64. the big difference is that he has had his whole life to play all the time, day and night, without worrying about bills. at least that's been my dilemma as a musician. every other thing gets in the way. Up until age 25 I could practice 8 hours a day, with an additional 4- 8 hours in gigs every week. For those who want the secret - that's it! practice and play all the time.
I totally agree Kam!
I love Steve Vai. Not only he is amazing but also love this showmanship!
Thank you.
