Hi Tomo,
Thank you for the new Lydian scale lesson! It is a very good lesson for learning the fingerings on the various string sets. Thank you!
What remains most confusing for me is 'when to use it'. The playing example you give works well as related to G major and it makes sense.
But how can I explore using it, and find the appropriate place to use it in a piece of music? Do I look for a IV - V cadence (where V is played over the root of IV) in a song? In your playing example F# is the critical pitch in the C/D chord (V of G), but G is never played, just implied in the overall harmony in the VI chord.
Personally, I've tried to simplify the thinking process by sharping the 4th to see if it works or not. But how can I recognize the moment where Lydian is the choicest of choices?
And, if it's a blues form, we wouldn't refer to it as a #4 at all, but a b5 (blue note).
So, perhaps the most noticeable aspect here is my own confusion.
But, I do hear/feel the #4 lydian note when properly used as bright, floaty, airy. It's a matter of discerning WHEN to use it!
Many thanks!
Hi Ken,
You're very welcome! So happy to hear that.
Technically you can play on 4 chord in any keys or even 1 chord vamp... you can use this scale.
BbMaj7
C/Bb (Right here!)
A-7
D-7
If you feel & hear this scale sound then you can play it.
Listen this video 5 more times and let sit this for a few weeks!
Thank you.
Tomo
Thanks Tomo. I'll give it a try. Is the above a progression: BbMaj7-C/Bb-A-7-D-7 what your suggesting to use as an example for playing the #4 over C/Bb? For some reason this is hard for me to understand. I'll give it focus tomorrow. Tomo! You're up late!! Sorry to disturb.
I'm tired and it's only 10:30 PM PST!
You're very welcome!
Yes. Bb is IV chord in key of F (Dm)
So good chord over to play Lydian sound. (Bb Lydian = F Major scale)
Thank you!
No rush! This type of video, you need to watch 2-3 weeks.
Tomo
Thanks Tomo. Okay. But wouldn’t the 2nd chord be Bb/C which has the Lydian note E? I’m not seeing the Lydian note in C/Bb in the above progression. I’ll keep looking! I’ve got a blind spot here! Great! Means I haven’t learned it thoroughly!
Sorry!
