As I work the November challenge, I rest the instrument on my right leg now. I have always been resting the guitar on my left leg because I learned that way when I was 9 years old.
I am left-handed, playing a right-handed guitar.
I do not know why Martin does not put a strap button on the neck of their guitars. A strap tied behind the nut might be okay if I get used to it, but it seems awkward. I have not found a strap button that matches the one that came with the guitar to fit in the body. Do I need a strap if I sit mostly? Standing to play feels good so I think I should explore standing...
D-28 Martin, I don't want damage the value by not matching the stock strap button. Does anyone know where I can find a strap button for the neck that is a close match? Martin has nothing on their website.
Thank you,
Marc Hembree
Hi Marc,
I too have a Martin, a D18, and yeah they have no strap button the neck of the guitar. The luthier shop that deals with Martins are a bit far away from my home so I went with the strap tied to the nut. It did take a bit to get used to now I mostly am. I'd give it a try if you are hesitant.
If you need a strap button find the local luthier that does Martin repairs. They should be able to lead you in the right direction.
And should you use a strap when sitting? Before I'd say that it didn't matter. But now I know that having the guitar at a proper angle is important for proper technique. As well it's advantageous to have the guitar angle/position consistent as you are playing/practising. Try not to add too many different variables as you play.
Finally, good luck on your chromatic scales. They are effective to teaching good technique!
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
Happy new year! Thank you for this reply. I will try to find a strap I love. I think that will help. I need to just practice more and engage here in 2025. Joy!
Hi Marcus,
Welcome to Guitar Wisdom! Nice to meet you! You touched on an interesting topic about vintage guitars and modifications. So many points of view for this topic. I made this video to share the journey of "Suzie" my 1951 Martin 0-15. Happy New Year! I look forward to seeing you around the forum!
Hi Ken!
Lovely 0-15 guitar! Great advice!!
Thank you for your wonderful insight. Beautiful Martin there. I love the warm sound of the mahogany Martins. As far as the strap button on my guitar goes, I will most likely put one on when I know I am 100 percent sure I have the right location, and I am in the mood to drill. 1 shot to get it right. I ordered a strap today though.
I really loved that you took the time to video a reply. Amazing!
here is to a new year at guitar wisdom!
