Hello TFGW Friends!
This message is dedicated to all of you out there in the world, trying your best to improve. I want to remind you of Tomo's wisdom: don’t worry, don’t compare, don’t expect too fast, and be kind to yourself!
Although the new year is often seen as the best time to refocus and recommit to your goals, it's important to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on ourselves. Instead of trying to become the “best version" of yourself overnight, think about how you can show up consistently. Remember: Consistency > Intensity — this is key in your guitar journey.
Here’s an actionable step to get started:
1. Write down your main goal for this year (or however many months). Whether it’s mastering a new song, improving your technique, or understanding music theory, be clear about what you want to achieve.
2. Break that goal into smaller, manageable objectives. For example, if you want to play a specific piece, identify the skills or techniques you need to focus on first. Divide it into smaller tasks, like spending a few weeks on the R 3 7 swing groove or dedicating time to listening deeply to understand the song's structure.
3. Plan your weekly practice sessions around these smaller goals. Focus on 1 or 2 key lessons that will help you build the foundation for greater achievements. Don’t forget to schedule time for review — sometimes revisiting old material is just as important as tackling new challenges ;)
4. Prepare. If you need to change your strings or set up your amp, do it ahead of time! That way, when it comes time to practice you are ready to go. *Tomo emphasizes the importance of preparation, and it's a strategy that will work for you too! You can think of it as taking care of future you - an act of kindness that will make your practice sessions run smoothly.
It’s important to note that if you find yourself on a path that isn’t leading you where you want to go, take a step back and consider trying a different route. There isn’t a single correct way to learn guitar, and there’s always more to discover. Take comfort in knowing that there is no “wrong” way to progress; whatever choices you make here at Guitar Wisdom are steps forward, even if it doesn’t feel that way at times.
Most importantly, keep practicing, have fun, and remember: we’re all in this together. We may follow our own paths, but as we learned through the November Challenge, there are many shared experiences and opportunities to “learn better together” :). We take things one step at a time, and we support each other along the way.
All my best,
Sammi
Truly great suggestions here Sammi! Thank you. A lot of what you mentioned here reminds me of an approach called the “Swiss cheese” approach: just one bite at a time!
And, the answer to the question: “how do you eat an Elephant?”
One bite at a time!
I used to have a figurine of an elephant on my desk to remind me of this! I need to find it!
Great advice!
I'd take notes on your progress each session in brief and every week or so go back and see how your goals are doing. Not reaching them? Do you take a step back and make a smaller goal? Do you need some resources or support to get there?
Cheers Sammi!
