Hi Tomo,

I'd like to interject here as a full time educator. Memorizing IS indeed learning but it is a very low form of it using rote memory rather. In education some people use Bloom's Taxonomy to categorize stages of learning.

Here they are from lowest to highest: remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluating and creating.

So, while remembering is an important stage for any learning (i.e. if you remember nothing or have dementia nothing gets in so you can't take it to a higher level), it is just the start. From this type of categorization even understanding is quite low. We need to get to the higher levels to really show learning.

With this said, I do agree with Mark that GW does still emphasize understanding, application, and creating etc. Great to see that when too many teachers focus on just memorizing shapes.

Learning triads are very deep! Not only recognize all the details yet we need to play them very musically and without any noises etc.

First learn them, then practice them (how?) not only technical. With a lot of attention on many details. Then apply triads to chord choices before songs.

If you memorized them... it makes very difficult to apply them & play music naturally.
My story,... I memorized 5 minor pentatonic positions when I was 14. After 3 months. I tried not remember those shapes! That was very hard! Now I cannot play those shapes but if I hear those pentatonic phrasing then I can play them. That's how Eric Johnson plays... he does not use any memorization via guitar learning, guitar practicing,.

Exactly! If you only memorize and don't go beyond that your progress will be stifled for sure. That's why many of us are here because we want deep learning.

For triad practicing... better not use tempo. If you can not hear it but you know the shape... that's when you should not play it. Be honest to yourself how much you really know (can hear it before you touch it) This part is so important for me.

Do not make this as a routine. You need to practice triads but you need to keep your pace and do not push too much. Try just C... then F... then mix C & F for fun! Do not use any tempo.
This stage is "Practice" "Learning" ... later you can jam with them. Plus through practicing triads, you can learn your thumb position, relaxed left hand and more!

Feel each triad inversion before you touch it!

I will make a few videos that I can explain around triads. How to learn them effectively and what should not to do etc.
