I have been practicing it at 50 bpm for quite a while now but this is faster and with a few mistakes. I would welcome any advice on how I can improve.
I would just like to thank Jaiyang and Christine for their very helpful posts and inspiration.
Good job Andrew!
Too fast!
Best way to do is slower and do not concern about any tempo yet.
Your single note is getting faster so whenever you find any mistakes (mistakes are good!)
Do not use that tempo!
Good job! Please go slower and slower for two weeks!
Love to see this video! I am so grateful.
Just in case, I just played it with 40 per beat,
This tempo is fastest tempo when you are working on both hands muting technique.
I would say ... Page 6,7,10,11.... stick to these for as long as you need!
This way your techniques will be much better and it makes everything easier than before.
PS, This one is Sea to Sea.. You get some ideas about tempo.
Lovely playing!
Thank you.
Tomo
Hi Tomo, thanks for having a look as this. I really appreciate your advice and I knew it was too fast and I was trying too hard. I'll slow it all down until it is easy before moving on
Thanks again
You're very welcome and I really appreciate your post!
Your post is so inspiring to me and others a lot!
That was very fast! That's what I don't do... because if I do.. I have to practice same thing too many hours! I practice less time and focus deeply.
Thank you.
Tomo
Love the camera angle for muting details. Thank you Tomo.
That guitar is beautiful!
Kurt
You're very welcome!
That set up! (Secret)
Thank you!
I saw a guy had a trick where he would cut a small piece of the low E string (the length of the neck width) and tuck it up tight against the nut in the first fret to make his acoustic sound more in tune. I never tried it.
Kurt
Great performance Andrew! You sound great hard to run through all of that like you did with no mistakes on the notes. Also sounded clean to me very nice going. Nice to meet you and nicely done on posting your performance!
Many thanks Jeffrey, as I thought I need to slow down! And quite a "few!" takes before I had just a few mistakes. When the camera is on things get more difficult :)
HI Andrew, I thought that was excellent. I'm inspired and looking forward to getting to that one. That is a long piece.
Thanks for posting it. I know it is weird to film yourself. You looked really natural and playing is clean.
I enjoyed it.
Kurt
Hi Kurt
Thanks, as you say odd filming yourself, I look very serious!
I always enjoy reading your posts
Cheers
Thanks for posting this video Andrew. Nicely done, and I understand very well that it is harder than it looks for sure. To pay attention to all the details while picking is not easy. I actually think it's often easier to fingerpick than flat pick! Mr. Leavitt was on a mission to prove that flat picking is just as respectable in a time when fingerpickers were sort of the gold standard.
I enjoyed what you did! Thank you!
Hi Ken
Who knew flat picking was so hard! I've mostly used fingers so this is s big and enjoyable challenge. All made easier with the friendly support here.
Enjoy
Yes, that little piece of plastic is a very challenging tool to employ. I’m trying so hard not to try and speed up all the time. Because when I do, my hand starts bouncing up and down like a prairie dog!
Such a beautiful music , Andrew ! Love your performance !
So happy I can help you , I think you're a great inspiration to me , too!
Great video , so good , learn from you !:)
Hi Jiayang
Thanks, I'm not as good with words as you hence the video. We're all helping each other keeping our enthusiasm for getting better at guitar which is great. Obviously helped by a kind but hard task master... Tomo :)
It's a shame I didn't find this years ago.
All the best
Yes , Andrew ! I think your words is good , it's not just the video !
So happy we can learning together and helping together , We found the GW team here , Tomo ,Sami ,George , guess what ? And whole GW family , It's just in time , Don't worry , We all here , We growing together !
All the best .
Thank you Andrew for your kind words!
Two things... very important in life.
" Never too late "
" No regrets "
Dreams & Hopes = YOU and everyone!
Thank you.
Tomo
Beautiful! So important to remember those things. Thanks for the reminders and inspiration, Tomo. I'm loving practice today and getting my shot of Guitar Wisdom! I guess I'm just a hopeless junkie for this stuff. I hope I never get "the cure."
No regrets! Never too late to get better. We don't trip over things behind us!
Kurt
So happy to hear that Kurt!
I am feeling good today!
I practiced a few foundation.
It's all positive thinking no matter what....
We are humans so we feel not that great sometimes... Don't worry! Don't think why
Tomo
Beautiful conversations guys!
I am so happy!
Tomo
Hi Andrew! You have a great touch and quality in this performance. It is wonderful to see your body move with your playing - lean into that feeling as you work on slowing it down!
Thank you so much for sharing this and inspiring others.
Sammi
Thanks Sammi. I have slowed down to 40bpm and have a lot to work on! Finger noise and hitting the right strings are the tricky ones. Don't expect too fast!. :)
Hi Andrew,
Just wanted to let you know that I was listening to you again- for fun! It sounds great. I'm inspired!
Thank you so much for sharing!
Kurt
That's very kind thank you. I must add that it took many "takes" to get something that was mostly correct. Now I need to get consistency. Back to slowing down and thinking about each note.
Cheers
Great inspiration!
Thank you!
Tomo
Back again. I've been practicing Sea to Sea and this 1234 duet for a couple of weeks now at 40 bpm +amp. I have started to be aware of my left hand position when its not parallel to the neck which I think reduces string noise. I still need to work on my timing and hitting the right string but this video was the only "take" so I'd like to think there is an improvement.
Obviously it would be very nice if I could have some advise on things I should improve
Welcome back Andrew! Good job playing this! Thank you so much!
Your muting technique is really good!
When you mute... try not to get any pick noise. So touch / mute slightly softer.
Single note, relax more so that your note will be dancing with groove!
Move your body with each beat. Do not RUSH rhythm. Body metronome must!
Overall so good!
Tempo is super fast too me!
I do insanely slow to practice this so that each time I can improve.
More slow you practice you can play faster and smoother later.
If you pick this tempo or faster... you will spend house and not going forward.
(Hope not too harsh comment)
Thank you.
Tomo
Thanks so much Tomo, you and this forum is so helpful and inspiring.
With my pick noise, I have been trying to play chords quickly, should I slow this down and hear every note?
I'll work on my inner metronome, it's the first thing to disappear when it gets tricky.
Too fast! 😳😄 I will go slower.
Thanks again, no advise is too harsh, I am wanting to improve👍
My pleasure Andrew!
Thanks so much for posting your video!
This is so valuable to all GW forum members & me!
Eventually you can do quickly, playing these chords & muting together!
More you practice slower then you can play faster and cleanly later.
A little too fast for me. I practice very slow so that I don't have to repeat too many times.
You're very welcome! Written words has no feeling so just in case!
Thank you.
Tomo
Thanks Tomo, I'm not a wordy guy so videos work for me.
I know, it is the KISS principle, "keep it slow stupid" but "Don't expect too fast" is much nicer. :)
So I have dropped the metronome to 35bpm to give me more thinking time
Many thanks
Andrew
You're very welcome Andrew! Your post is so inspiring!
When I teach guitar in private lesson. I would say things very clear & straight.,
I taught this guy name Mike Balding (he was 18-19) And he is so smart that he asks so many questions "Why" Once we are practicing Modern Reading Text in 4/4... I only use one page: Page 4) He was doing his own way because he thought it was okay. So I told him " You were wrong before you have started! " Something like that. That became our joke!
Thank you so much!
Hi ,Andrew ! You're here , Love your performance , it's so inspire me , because these day I have a bit rush , you reminds me consistency is so beautiful , appreciate for this .
All the best !
Thank you for your encouragement to Andrew!
Beautiful gesture and your support!
Thank you.
Tomo
Hi Jiayang, thanks for the support its really appreciated. Equally you are a great support for me and it's very nice to know I'm not alone in the basics.
All the best and Enjoy 👍
A quick question on pick noise, Tomo,
When you pick a string do you momentarily rest the pick on the string and then "pluck" the string(s)? Rather than hitting the strings in one swipe. I'm just wondering as it looks, in videos, like you may be doing that.
Many thanks
Andrew
Thanks for asking.
Basically I use my right hand palm to mute all the strings and my pick is ready to pick next things or lightly touch the strings but no noise. I am super sensitive on any extra noise!
So one thing you can do is record yourself more often. Check any noise issues.
If you hear any noise, then play everything slower. Slower is better.
This book is play good musical examples through sight-reading. Even pro guitarists could make a few picking noises or finger noises.
I use this book to fix any noise / muting technique issues. So that we all can improve guitar playing forever! In order to do this... we need a strong commitment toward guitar techniques.
You are doing fantastic!
Thanks so much for your inspiration.
Thank you.
Tomo
Many thanks Tomo
It's been a while! I have been trying to strum the chords from my elbow rather than my wrist which I think is more like Tomo and feel it reduces my pick noise and has a better tone, honest comments please :). I have found it very difficult to hit the correct string and have slowly got better also for some reason my fingers have a problem finding the right strings too, go figure! Any way this is my rather long effort at 35bpm which I apologise for in advance.
Great effort and discipline Andrew! Your commitment is definitely inspiring and paying off! Leavitt & Tomo are an effective duo for us to improve our musicianship and quality of technique on guitar. Thanks for this video! Salad!
I am so happy to hear these!
Thank you Ken!
Thank you Andrew!
Tomo
I appreciate your rather long effort, Andrew! After watching and listening to this, I went back and watched your previous videos and can notice a huge difference. I think you are on the mark strumming from your elbow rather than your wrist. It sounds so nice and smooth! Impressive work my friend.
Happy weekend Andrew. Thanks for the notes on strumming too! From elbow will try this too. Hope you’re doing great I’m having some technical issues watching the link is private. Could be something on my end will try again later
