I began not knowing much of any theory and have only been with the guitar for a little over a year. After 5 months straight of 4-8 hour practice days incorporating Tomos videos and information into my practice, i have improved beyond measure! I am so stoked to continue from here.
In the beginning I was overwhelmed with the content and just started from the beginner sections.
I was eager and flew through the beginner and theory section not really knowing what I was learning and integrating…just trusting it was good for me.
If I could go back I would take my time, and watch each video 5-6 times until I fully grasped the concept before moving on
( I ended up doing this anyways but I was still going from one video to the next) No Rush friends. Go slow you’ll be happy you do.
After 2-3 months I STILL really didn’t know what I was learning (definitely because I rushed a bit , but also because I think the brain just takes a while to integrate the language)
It wasn’t until about month 4-5 here that I now feel my mind is comprehending the theory side of things. And how to apply it.
For example, simply just incorporating modes and scales (Vertical And horizontal) into improv, as well as why they apply to certain chord progressions. When tomo was soloing in those mode videos I just did not understand how and why he could do it like that and how it could be possible to get to a place where I don’t have to memorize in order to play a solo or freely improv.
Intervals intervals intervals woah.
My intention here is really just to second tomos philosophy and encourage everyone beginning their journey here- to TRUST the process and of course have fun and be patient with yourselves. Go Slow! Don’t be like me and rush through. You’ll end up going back anyways and I think it’s worth it to sit with the information received for at least couple of days before taking in more.
Beginning month 5 here I am JUST NOW feeling like I actually grasp the concepts I am learning and can use it beyond the very basic and dry practice. With that said I have fallen in love with the simple “dry “ slow practice and see how it is really the way that I am able to process and actually learn the concepts.
Thank you thank thank you Tomo and EVERYBODY here for making this all come together. I feel like I have received so much in such a short time and my confidence with the instrument is increasing day by day. This gift is gold to me.
I hope this message resonates with new students and can save y’all some time by slowing down a bit and even when you’re not getting it-TRUST TOMO. Lol and yourselves and that you absolutely will gain understanding in time.

Truth! Thanks for sharing Dillion.
Thank you Dillion for sharing your experience!
It's so real, amazing and beautiful!
Now you know how to slow down & review more.
Great job! Love what you have been doing!
Thank you for trusting me! It means a lot! I have been teaching at Berklee since 1993.
It took me many years to understand common teaching ways... not good enough.
Anything to make good, great... it will take some time.
We don't really know how long... exactly... because each person is so special!
Someone may needed to have a little more extra time.
That's why when people ask " How long .... " and not be patient for another week... Could make a wrong decision! Be patient is very important key! So glad to hear that you love " Simple & Dry " practice!
Thank you so much for your efforts.
Tomo
