New guy here who has been playing guitar off and on for 40 years. I am the definition of the guy Tomo talks about when he says you learn patterns and never improve. Just in the past week or so of focusing on triads I'm seeing the fretboard better and navigating the neck better. Anyway, I found Tomo on YouTube when searching for something several years ago (probably a John Mayer something or other), and his style, demeanor and humor just clicked with me. I really like the "don't compare" mantra he has, it's very healthy. And the "Tomo-isms" really crack me up. I followed Tomo on Youtube for years and finally decided to join GW.
Anyway, off to practice. Have a great Sunday everyone.

Thank you Matt! Welcome to Guitar Wisdom!
Don't worry! Anybody can fix it! Typical guitar learning method is not so great.
It's so easy to stuck many years. I am so happy being here! Thank you so much!

Hi Matt,
Welcome to GW! Up until I joined GW last spring, I was you. I had been playing for almost 30 years on and off and hadn't progressed very far beyond a few simple tunes and patterns.
It's been almost a year and I actually know triads across all string sets with notes and intervals, the same with 7th chords and now arpeggios. And in the past 10 months I have progressed so much that my family now notices and likes to hear me play.
Interesting anecdote. I've been also doing TrueFire's free 12 week bootcamp to solidify some aspects of my playing and since it's free I can download and save tons of resource. Anyhow, each week they have beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons and I can truly say for that format I've been doing the advanced lessons. I was so blown away at how much progress I've made in almost a year. :) Thanks Tomo!
So, I can say if you study the videos well, take notes, revisit often and take it slow and learn deeply and repeat often you will make great progress.
It's so amazing that when you have a teacher that actually focuses on teaching and learning (I am a teacher, too, for reference so I have some experience in the field of education) and not trying to get more YT subscribers or making some fancy lesson with little learning to again get subscribers then the sky is the limit.
Thanks Tomo too for your excellent teaching, and as Matt says, we love your attitude about your don't compare motto. As Matt says very healthy :)
Again welcome Matt, we can't wait to see your progress! :)
Thank you Michael!
I really appreciate your kind words!
Truefire kept asking me to make a course for them.
So I kept saying "No"
Thank you.
Tomo
Thanks for the welcome. Yeah, I'm definitely taking Tomo's advice. I'm working on triads and single string scales. It feels good to be changing my mindset from this 'solo starts on the 2nd string on the 5th fret' to 'this solo starts on the e note on the b string and is just going from the e triad 2nd inversion through a passing chord to the root triad.'
knowledge is good for you, like vegetables - Tomo (paraphrased)
You're very welcome!
Make more space... pause... so you can hear things deeper.
I love one string approach very much!
Triads are good friend!
Thank you!
