Say in a C,G,Am,F progression if we use triads to improvise all notes are in C major. What comes into consideration when we choose to include notes outside triads i.e. we can use G mixolydian or G major over G (F or F#), F lydian or F major over F (B or Bb)? We choose by ear only? Depends on the style of music? Doesnt matter as long as we think it sounds good? Any "rules"?
Great question !
Okay! C G Am F... Simple chord changes so I don't think any modes like G Mixolydian.
First try to play only triads on only 2nd string. Then you can play Do Re Mi from each root!
then play any motes that sounds great to you!
Just in case, if you hit any sour note... hit it again! So you know "Why" not sweet (?)
I think very simple way!
1) C Major scale
2) Triad
3) Do Re Mi
4) No rules on good melody!
Please enjoy your guitar journey!
Thank you.

Great question Christine!
Thank you.

Tomo, thank you very much for the answer., and thank you Ken. I feel I am not all bad regarding first 3 points you made above. And 4 is something i will try and experiment with :) Work to do in the next few months. I made some effort to find clean(er) brighter tone in my PC amp sim, started focusing on the up strums when changing chords in R37 swing groove, strumming closer to neck pickup etc. Thank you Tomo. P.S. i am ok but not very good at playing triads (working on it) but i start seeing them as anchor points for some simple improvisation, wonderful concept.
You're very welcome! Great! Good job!
Play freely and record yourself! Please enjoy it!
Brighter & louder so you can hear noises when you practice R 3 7 swing!
First you need to be able to play triad C G Am F.... within 2-3 seconds....
Then try those only 2nd string... like my YouTube lesson from last week Friday.
Thank you.
