Nice Jacob. This is great. Looking forward to diving into your influences myself. Great goals too
Hi Tomo,
I have been enjoying your videos . YOU are a gifted teacher. I have taught bass for many years .
Influences:
1.) Jeff beck
2.) Skip James
3.) John Coltrane
4.) Jimi Hendrix
5.) Ornette Coleman
2.) 5 Favorite CD’s:
Jeff Beck “wired
Nick Drake “ pink Moon”
Beatles “Rubber soul”
Bach “B minor Mass”
John Coltrane “ Blue Trane “
3.) My strength as a player is my harmonic sense
4.) My weakness as a player is lack of fluidity soloing and comping
5.) My gear
Harley Benton SC-500 ( LP copy), Tokai telecaster , various acoustics I record into Logic and Ableton live . On gigs I use house amps . Usually a fender although I go through a line 6 Hx Stomp
6.) My goal as a player is to be able to solo well and comp well . I have been a pro bassist for many, many years .
Thank you Tom for your answer!
Which part of Jeff Beck are you really dig? I love Jeff Beck so much! I try to get his sense of feel. I use a lot of chromatic bend.
So you understand harmony & chord progression easily? Great harmonic sense so you can learn many songs. That's great!
Soloing... which way? Can you tell me a little more specific?
Comping... what type?
How about blues? Can you comp with 3rd & 7th (guidetone)
Soloing with triad inversions?
You understand chords so well being a pro bass player for many years!
Thank you.
Tomo
I loved Wired and Blow by Blow Jeff Beck . I was lucky enough to see the There and Back tour in 81 ? He phrases each note separately which is what distinguishes him from every other guitarist .
Soloing .. first attaining technical skills to reproduce Tony Iommi , jimmy page , Jeff beck .. Also be able solo as a conversation . connected .voice leading . not just riffs .
comping .. so much work here. I need more connected knowledge of fretboard to be able to compliment what others are playing .
I know guide tones. I think I can but I should test myself.
By the way , I was in Boston in 1987 on a gig . I had attended Berklee summer of 83 7 week program and the summer semester of 84 . I got to play with the afro latin ensemble with Bob Pilkington . Such agreat guy .
Thank you for your reply.
Listening blues is so importamt for improvisation.
Yes! So much to do for comping.
R 3 7 Swing Groove is so good!
3rd & 7th = guide tone!
Good job!
Wow! 7 week program back then?
Bob Pilkonton is cool guy!
Tomo

Tomo
Love this, Tomo! You don't have to reply if you're busy — I'm late to this post, and it was valuable just to go through the process of answering your questions, especially the goals.
1. Influences
I started playing guitar 6 months ago. Before that, I played trombone for ~40 years. Here are some guitar influences that I picked up along the way and since I started playing:
- Nile Rodgers
- Bruce Conte (Tower of Power)
- Grant Green — I read somewhere that he plays like a horn player — maybe that’s why I’m drawn to him?
- Takashi Kato (huge Ska Para fan)
- Freddie Green — I always love playing Count Basie arrangements but only if the guitarist can do that Freddie Green thing really well
2. Favorite CDs
- Tower of Power (self-titled)
- Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra “World Famous”
- Grant Green “Solid” (I’ve been transcribing his solo from the title track and trying to learn it)
- Michael Jackson “Off the Wall”
- Chucklehead "Big Wet Kiss" (a Boston funk band in the 90s that my friend played trumpet in — funky and funny)
3. Strengths as a player
I’ve only been playing for 6 months, so it’s hard to say, but here are some:
- I *love* practicing every day. I actually look forward to practicing, which was rarely true of my trombone practicing
- I seem to have good relative pitch to repeat phrases and learn licks
- New, developing strength: major triads (I practice them every day)
- Decent theory foundation
- Good taste about what sounds good
- Starting to get basic funk strumming (16th-note patterns) down
4. Weaknesses
- Not much dexterity yet on the fretboard
- Can’t play very fast
- Not great at muting (left or right), though starting to improve (practicing R37 triad strumming with muting on upstroke has helped tremendously)
- Pressing too hard (chromatic scale exercise is helping)
- Can’t easily slide up and down on multiple strings simultaneously
- Can’t bend strings very well (Tomo lesson is helping)
- Can’t improvise very well (even on trombone) — mostly just play on the blues scale and hope for the best
5. Gear
- Fender Player II Telecaster (2025, chambered ash)
- Spark 2 amp
6. Goals
- Learn to play jazz standards (melody and chords together) and improvise on them
- Learn funk chords, riffs and strumming
- Learn to play blues (including blue solos) on guitar
- Get comfortable playing melodic lines, not just chords
- Get better at muting
- Get better at hearing what I want to play and playing it (I loved the recent July challenge for that reason — I got pretty good at singing the triads before playing them)
- Be able to play classic solo guitar songs like Blackbird, Here Comes the Sun
Thank you Andy! So happy to hear that!
I am at the airport lounge now! Narita airport.
Good job! Wow! Amazing experiece on trombone!
I love Nile Rodgers, Grant Green…YES! Freddie Green! R 3 7 Swing King!
I was just spending my time with Takashi Kato yestersday! We became great friends!
I bet you can apply many things to guitar playing.
Do more one string / one finger approach on Major scale & triad inversions.
Yes! Guitar is very special phsically…. so you need to practice chromatic scale everyday! (10-15 minutes a day)
https://tomovhxtv.vhx.tv/videos/ft01-simple-chromatic-scale-exercise-1-2-3-4
https://tomovhxtv.vhx.tv/videos/ft02-chromatic-scale-exercise-1-2-1-2
Good job! R 3 7 Swing Groove is so important for any rhythm guitar include funk rhythm guitar.
String bending is very hard. More chromatic scale!
You need a real amp! If you want to improve your tone, your touch…. (those degital amps are like instant miso soup!)
Tomo
“Pressing too hard (chromatic scale exercise is helping”….As Tomo points out below, the Chromatic exercises are SO helpful with over-gripping the guitar neck. Tomo also has a chromatic exercise for vertical across the fretboard. Go super slow to reveal details. I do these every day. It takes a while, but you will learn something each time. Don’t expect too fast.
I love Grant Green also…I think the comparison to horn players might be about phrasing…wind players must take a breath so it results in a different sound/style.
Just went and listened to some Takashi Kato….he is something!
Safe travels, Tomo! No instant miso soup!
Thanks so much for your encouragement and advice, and for writing to me from Narita (I was there a few weeks ago, by the way). So cool that you were just with Kato! I love that band, especially Kitahara.
For now the Spark 2 has some good advantages for me — lots of different sounds without having to buy pedals, etc. and very portable. But I hear what you're saying about a real amp being important to develop. I was recently in Miami and visited a guitar (and vintage car!) shop there called Walt Grace. I tried a Telecaster (Chris Shiflett signature, with P90 pickups) with a Princeton amp and I loved the sound so much.
BTW, of course I would never make instant miso soup, but after many years of making dashi from scratch, I found Kayanoya packets, and they are very good. I hate to admit it, but now I usually use those.
Thank you Linda for sharing! Great support for others!
Yes! Sax, Trumpet... horn players!
Great! Thank you so much! It was an amazing trip!
Now my son Michael and orher 5 friends are in Japan now!
I just made this video....
Tomo
You’re very welcome Andy! My pleasure!
Now I am back in Boston! You were at Narita a few weeks ago!
Yes. If you really want to gain a great touch, dynamics control then you want to use a real amp with less knobs (Less choices)
I know that music store Walt Grace. Princeton amp! Better than Princeton Reverb Amp! I sold that one to Kanji Kawabata. He needed to have a real great sounding amp.
Dashi = real amp!
Instant Miso Soup = any digital amp!
Good job!
Tomo
Awesome Andy! I like to play a telecaster too
Everyone's responses are so great. I wish I could remember what I wrote for these answers back in the day. When I watched the video of yours here Tomo, I didn't feel like you were asking us all to answer the questions. Did you want everyone's feedback on the video alone or everyone to respond to the questionnaire? Watching the video it stood out to me that people are too casual with their responses. It sounded to me that they would contradict themselves. Please correct me if I am wrong. "You have to trust yourself," are words that stood out to me. Being honest where you are is so important. At one point in time I thought I was very disciplined and I am sure on a spectrum I could be considered that. When I dug deep within myself and gained knowledge deeper I realized I was only ignorant. While my discipline is greater now, I still have so much room to grow. It is a constant journey of life we are on.
Hi Serena! If I remember correctly, Tomo's questionnaire was being mentioned elsewhere in the forums, and so Tomo shared it here. I think he was curious what people thought of these questions AND wanted people to think about these questions...
Completing this questionnaire seems to be a valuable exercise in organizing your thoughts and narrowing your focus. If your answers are vague, then it is really difficult to define a path or focus for yourself. I think that's part of it - making a choice/decision and being firm in it, so then you can set clear goals. For some people this is really easy, but I know for myself these types of questions are quite challenging for me to answer. Like you pointed out, "You have to trust yourself".
Personally, I find it fascinating to read people's responses! So feel free to share, but don't feel like you have to.
Thank you Serena , you say so well . I wish I can answer this no vague .
“ You have to trust yourself ”
“It is a constant journey of life we are on ”
Right on Sammi. Thank you for getting back to me. I appreciate it. I think it will be good for me to review where I am now compared to when I started lessons with Tomo. :)
Thank you Jiayang. Great hearing from you.
Thank you Serena for stopping by.
No pressure! Nice to know simple answers on your top 5 guitar players/artists that influenced you.
Writing is better and keep all in ONE PAGE length. Very important to keep in ONE PAGE.
Thank you.
Tomo

Hello Tomo,
Thank you so much for your invaluable content and all that you share through Guitar Wisdom.
About 13 years ago, I applied to an arts high school as a guitar major. For my audition piece, I chose your song, "Just Funky." Unfortunately, I didn't pass, but that was the moment I discovered your YouTube channel, and I've been watching ever since. After that experience, I was afraid to seriously pursue music again.
But I could never give up playing the guitar. All this time, I've kept playing, and every time I do, I feel happy. There’s no special reason; it just brings me joy.
Interestingly, my journey with the guitar led me to learn foreign languages like English and Spanish. Now, I'm currently working in Mexico. In many ways, the guitar has completely changed my life.
That's why I'm excited to learn more from you through Guitar Wisdom. I know from your YouTube channel that your seemingly simple concepts provide incredible inspiration and have a huge impact on my playing.
As part of the course, I'm sharing my self-assessment answers below.

- Tomo Fujita
- Stevie Ray Vaughan
- Eric Johnson
- John Mayer
2. Favorite CD’s, and list your favorite song from each artists
- Fuzz Universe
- Put On Your Funk Face
- Texas Flood
- Via Musicom
- Where the Light Is
3. What is your strength as a player?
- Playing with attention to detail and dynamics.
- Being mindful of the overall balance within a band.
4. What is your strength as a player?
- Limited stylistic versatility.
- Stuck in the same pentatonic boxes
- Difficulty playing over the chord changes
5. List my Gear
- Fender Road Worn 50’s
- HX Stomp
- TS mini, Vermuram Jan Ray, Shanks, SC Gladio
6.My Goal
- To play a wider variety of styles with more depth
- To master the fundamentals.
- To start busking.
Thank you,
Hi Eunjae,
You’re very welcome! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you for playing my song Just Funky. It is very difficult to play correct way.
Please keep playing and learning guitar! No need to be a pro guitar player!
Play guitar for pure joy! Keep going and you can learn more! Guitar is simply amazing!
I am so happy that you are here now!
My YouTube channel is more inspiration & more entertainment.
Thank you for include my name on your top 5!
I love how Paul Gilbert play his guitar with his face!
Okay… SRV, John Mayer and Me! You need to go back to old blues!
BB King! To be versatile… you need to know one style really well!
Away from visually play…. no tabs, no diagrams, no youtube lessons!
Learn more One String Approach, Triads and Blues!
You’re so ready to do what you wish to do!
Tomo
Thank you Sammi!
Tomo
Hello Tomo,
Thank you for your response.
I appreciate you saying that I don't need to be a pro guitar player. It gives me the courage to keep enjoying the process of learning and playing the guitar. Your comment has given me a clear direction. It's great to get this kind of feedback on this site.
As you recommended, I will go back to the old blues. First, I will listen to "Blue Monk" which you mentioned, and then B.B. King's "Live at the Regal" album that you recommended in the Blues Lesson video. I will also start learning about the One String Approach, Triads, and Blues on Guitar Wisdom.
I'm excited to try a new approach with the help of this site.
Thanks again!
You're very welcome! You can be a pro to yourself! Maybe better than normal pro guitarists!
A lot of room to improve yourself and you can enjoy your guitar playing. Thank you so much!
I use this method when I teach my students in my private lessons. This is first homework and I help them to write things down if they are not good at writing things.
I think you should be able to play Blue Monk Melody., R 3 7 finger picking first. Then you can use a metronome and follow a few settings. Then learn Solo Etude and r 3 7 strumming.
Yes. Listen Live at the regal album a lot. Great plan! Watch first video on essential theory lessons.C Major Scale (One string approach) then triad inversions, Blues (R 3 7)
Stay on a few topics at a time. Stay a few weeks or a few months on one topic. So you can learn one thing very deeply so that you can apply that concept to others.
Thank you.
Tomo
Awesome Eunjae Lee! Happy for you this is exciting to read this. Great influences and favorite cds. What type of road warn guitar is it I am now curious? I haven’t played one before sounds comfortable.
Your goals are so great
Thank you Jeff!
Yes! Great top 5!
Great goals!
Tomo
Hello Jeffrey,
Thank you for your comment.
I have a Road Worn '50s Stratocaster from Fender Mexico, which has a maple neck.
Actually, I don't find it very comfortable to play because it has a thick neck. I used to play an Eric Clapton Signature Strat, and it had a slimmer neck.
However, I really love this Road Worn guitar because of the relic finish, and it's perfect for playing blues in the style of SRV, Robben Ford, and John Mayer. It combines so well with a Fender tube amp and a Tube Screamer pedal!
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Hi Eunjae, I’m still trying to figure out what type of neck I like myself. I have a made in Mexico Strat to me this one is a thinner neck where the strings also seem closer together than the tele I have. I could be making up. But some things I notice are easier to play on one and some easier on other. I sometimes prefer the thicker neck, can be great. Would like to see the road warn one you have sometime sounds like a good finish on it
Challenging to pick just five influences and albums and songs but here goes:
1. List your influences (5 artists)
Carol Kaye
Tomo Fujita
John McGeoch
Jack White
Victor Wooten
2. 5 favorite CDs and list your favorite song from each artist
Pixies; Doolittle; Number 13 Baby
Siouxsie and the Banshees; Juju; Spellbound
Magazine; The Correct Use of Soap; Philadelphia
Christian Death; Only Theater of Pain; Burnt Offerings
Amy Winehouse; Back to Black; Back to Black
3. What is your strength as a player
Persistence and patience.
4. What is your weakness as a player
Spreading myself too thin. Skipping around to dabble in things that interest or excite me instead of completing what i'm currently working on
Shopping for gear instead of practicing!
5. List your gears, guitars, amps, effects, strings, picks, cables... etc
PRS Silver Sky SE
Orangewood Ava Mohagany
BJF-S66 and OC-EM112C for BJF-S66
Pickboy 1.00 mm

Electric and clip on tuners
6. What is you goal (and additional comments)
To play complete songs solo without accompaniment on guitar for my own enjoyment and to entertain friends; to know the the fretboard and understand theory at a deep and musical level; to learn to read music; to be able to figure out how to play a riff or a lick or song that I like when the mood strikes me (within the limits of my ability and sanity); to not fill my apartment with gear that I don't use.
Your name: It's... Ralph!
Thank you for reading!
Nice Ralph! I completely agree super tough to pick just 5. Great strength to have persistence and patience
Thank you Ralph for sharing your answers.
Oh my! You included my name on your top 5! Thank you so much!
Being patient is so good for learning guitar. Guitar practicing will make you calm and patient.
There are so many things aroung guitar playing so definitely it’s hard to focus but it’s so impotrant to narrow down and stay with one topic for a long time. Shopping gear is fun too!
I love my PRS Silver Sky SE! So glad that you got a Orangewood Ava Mahogany.
So happy to hear that you are using Pickboy picks!
What a great goal! Solo guitar style and be able to play solo by yourself! Joe Pass style (about solo guitar style without any specific styles) Actually I just put away my loop pedals lately. I am focusing more on solo guitar now.
I highly recomment to keep learning “Sight-reading” section with a method book ONE! Keep going!
Tomo
Thank you Jeff! Even 3 is better than 5!
Not easy but it is so effective!
Tomo
Thank you Tomo for the detailed feedback and encouragement. I plan to get back into my studies tomorrow. I will keep on with the Leavitt Method book one studies.
- R
You're very welcome Ralph. Great job! You can start from simple concept that you do 3 items everyday from 5 to 10 minutes each so this commitment will only take 15 to 30 minutes a day.
1) The Leavitt Book One
2) Chromatic Scale Exercise
3) R 3 7 Swing Groove or Triad Inversions or Blues Shuffle Bassline or Blue Shuffle Riff.
Everyday!
Tomo
Hello Tomo-san, thank you very much for giving us this opportunity to reflect and share. I’m happy to introduce myself here.
1) Influences (5 artists):
Char
Nile Rodgers
Eric Clapton
Larry Carlton
Kenji Omura

3) What is your strength as a player?
My sense of rhythm and groove, developed from playing drums for many years.
As a special memory, I once had the opportunity to play drums behind Char at a live event, performing Smoky together. That experience gave me even more appreciation for rhythm and groove.
4) What is your weakness as a player?
I just started playing guitar, so I cannot play solos or fast runs yet.
5) List your gear (guitars, amps, effects, strings, picks, cables, etc.):
Guitars: Fender Telecaster, Ibanez S Series, Martin 000-28
Amp: Fender Tone Master Deluxe Reverb
Effects: Overdrive, delay, compressor, chorus, reverb, tuner
Strings: D’Addario and Martin strings
Picks: Pickboy 1.0 mm, Ultex Jazz III XL, Fender Extra Heavy
Cables: Neutrik, History Pro series
6) What is your goal? (any additional comments):
My goal is to perform at a commemorative live event for my 60th birthday and showcase my guitar playing.
Starting guitar at this age has opened up a completely new world for me. It has made my life much richer, and I feel truly happy. Even though my daily work is very hard and full of pressure, playing guitar has had a positive effect on my work as well.
In the long run, I want to make guitar my lifelong friend — a new challenge for the rest of my life.
Name: Kazufumi
Great list Kazufumi! Thank you for sharing.
Nile Rodgers is so great! And yay for drummers.
I dabbled on drums -- punk rock band in college -- and did slightly more than dabble on bass -- different bands on and off. Now I dabble on guitar I guess.
No hay banda!
(A line from David Lynch's film Mulholland Drive.)
I didn't know about Char or Kenji Omura, so I checked them out on Spotify and Youtube. Thanks so much for turning me on to both of them, Kazufumi! In particular, Omura's songs are kind of funny — "Seiko Is Always On Time", "春がいっぱい” (Haru ga ippai), and of course "外人天国" (Gaijin Tengoku). As someone who lived in Japan in the 80s and 90s, the last one was especially funny to me :)
Thank you Kazufumi for sharing your answer!
I ask this too all my private lesson students.
Great top 5! I love all these guitar players!
Kenji Ohmura… has American blues sound! You need more blues!
As you know Char is still my hero!
He influennced “Rhythm Guitar” aspect of guitar playing very much.
Being drummer for many years… that’s so great!
Oh my god!! That’s so insane!!
No need to play that fast! Play something very well with slow tempo first.
Guitar playing is so much fun! Chromatic scale exercise is so importamt.
So happy to hear that you are using Pickboy pick!
What a great goal! Guitar can make your life so much richer! Keep going.
Tomo
Thank you so much, Ralph! Yes, Nile Rodgers is truly amazing — I’ve been inspired a lot by his rhythm guitar. Great to hear that you also played drums and bass in your college days! That experience definitely gives you a strong sense of groove. And thank you for the movie reference — it made me smile :)

1. My goal is to break free from the numbness I feel inside by using the guitar to express my emotions and help me open up my heart after a long period of heartache. Therapy. I don't want to play in front of a crowd, I don't want to be a rock star. I want to be my true self. I think guitar can help me do that.
I hear some universal truths here. It’s a great hike, unbelievable views my friend!
Super informative, Scott! Didn't see a Kid A track coming - that's cool! I truly hope your journey continuously gets you closer to your goal.
Scott, thanks for sharing and welcome to this forum. Hopefully, you have found your tribe. I think you are on the right path....guitar can help you make sense of the heartbreak.
You list "persistence" in your strengths. Lean on that strength going forward. We're excited to hear more from you.
Thank you Scott for sharing your answer! Thanks so much for your kind words! Guitar can bring us together! I am so grateful! You’re very welcome!
You know… I love how Neal Schon plays his melody…melodic solo! I never met him in person. I would love to! He buys a lot of guitars from Wild West from LA.
Don’t worry! You can fix anything here! Chromatic scale & sight-reading (Method book) can make you so patient! Triad study & R 3 7 swing groove can make you go slow!
You’re left handed. Try to work on your tone & your touch! Just you, guitar & amp! Try that as your basic study format. Practice clean tone! Use your Deluxe Reverb nornal channel so you get better tone! No reverb! Then when you work on your performance use your favorite gear to get your tone! Guitar is a great therapy for me!
PS, I highly recommend to use Pickboy 1.00mm Celluloid Pick.
